I'm slow, I'm sorry. It just never dawned on me about using a keyboard stand to hold a table top until the post here about someone getting a new servante that he could attach to his keyboard stand. (I'd heard about luggage stands, but didn't know where you could get one. I'd thought about TV tray stands, but it didn't seem to me they were tall enough.) I did a search on eBay for "keyboard stands" and found things running the gauntlet of prices.
Another question. If I wanted to make my own center leg table and got a music stand. (Although a drum stand might be sturdier.) Where could I find a flange for the table top?

The flange you would need is a VERY standard piece of plumbing hardware, usually made of galvanized metal. Comes in every standard plumbing pipe size (there are only 3 or 4), and shouldn't set you back more than 3 bucks.

Cool! Thanks. I'll take a look at the hardware store nearby!

What threw me was, the last time I got a music stand and tried to attach a top to it, it didn't have a threaded attachment that the flange would work with. It had a plastic sleeve on top which the music holder's pin would slip into. So I wondered if there was something special. Apparently I need to make certain the music holder I buy has a threaded screw to attach to the flange. Thanks again!

You are very welcome, Sir! You did the right thing in taking the short cut you did, but for the future just keep in mind that there are other types of plumbing fittings that you could have used to fix that other, earlier problem as well. But like I said, getting the threaded piece matched to a flange is definitely the fastest way to go!
Good luck with your table! ps- What was the price for that fitting? |

Here's a thought. Mike stands are almost as cheap as music stands. They generally have a stronger column, unless you have one of those symphonic style stands. There are some that come with standard mike flange fittings. you can get these fittings from a music store that carries PA gear. Atlas makes a good one.
But if you really want do do this inexpensively, get two 2 inch floor flanges from your plunmbing store. Then get a column of 2 inch PVC pipe. You will need a circular piece of 3/4 inch plywood, which you can get at Home Depot, and a couple of pipe to flange adapters. You will need 3 furniture glides as well. Then all you need is your table top. Screw one floor flange to the circle, and the other to the table top. Place the furniture glides at 120 degree increments near the edge of the circle on the bottom. This gives you a very steady table. You can make the table any height you want by simply cutting the PVC pipe to the proper height. I used 2 inch pipe for mine. It is very stable, but light.

Wow, Bill! That's awesome! Now I don't have to go buy a 200 dollar table! Thanks!

The main thing to watch out for is not to let people lean on the table top. The threads in the pvc pipe fittings can be a bit fragile.

With all due repect to Mr Palmers advice, this tip is best used as a stop-gap measure, a quickie/cheapie way to build up some props to fill out your stage area as you learn your way around a new routine, etc. Once that is established, go on and spend the 30-50 bucks and make the longer lasting, better looking stuff that you really want and need.

I made a tabletop I was pretty happy with except the wood edging. It was crap.
My good friend is a wood worker and was very interested in making "magic table tops" to put his woodworking chops to use. Mostly I think it was too keep his wife from selling his woodworking equipment. So he makes my tables. The wood frame is beautiful and the table is very stiff but not heavy at all. A lot of time goes into making the wood frame just perfect. Sanding, varnishing, etc. My tabletop has no exposed screws, nails, etc. I hardly spent any money at all on the first go-round. Just time. But now I have something I'm very proud to pull out of the bag and use. Personally, I also think stop-gap measures and quickie/cheapie is a great way to go until you figure out what's going to work for you in the long run. Make these puppies yourself. Experiment. Have fun. Make your own props. I was realizing recently that there's nothing I perform with that is not hand-made by myself or somebody I know except for very few items. Cards, silks, rings. And soon, I'll have to take 'rings' off that list. Frank

I would hardly call it a stop gap measure. I used an open backed shallow box for the top, and covered it with heavy upholstery velvet over a foam pad. By putting fringe at the lower edge, I made it look like a fairly normal table. The open back gave me a servante. The table is now in storage in my warehouse. The column can be painted any color you like, from flat black to brilliant red. Or you can cover it with chrome paper. It is much better than you think.

I just used my keyboard stand for the first time at a show. It wasnt used for busking yet, becuase I still havent built my top for it yet.
But this was a charity stage show, so I sset up the stand, threw a drape over it, and just sat a cardbox box that I had covered in black felt, and put a top over half of it, on the stand. That way I had a dump box, and also a nice place to steal from. If you have ever seen Duane Laflins table, this box is moedled after the top of his table with velcro inside to hold up items like a silk fountain, hank ball, and even thunbtips that can be stolen as you dump something. But back to the keyboard stand. But at $9.95 at a music store opening a while back, I was very pleased with the weight (not nearly as heavy as I thought, and height adjustment flexibility, not mention the price of the Keyboard stand. Knowing now that it will be practical to schlep around, I will finally take the time and get the top built. Especially since it finally stopped raining here, and I may actually be able to get out and perfrom..... But I should have known better. If it is good enough for Kozmo, it is good enough for me. Sounds interesting Nick. I have a camping table that has a top that will roll up, so I know it is handy.
Is yours solid enough to do cups and balls on it. The camping table top would seem to need a lot of additional support for cups and balls. I already have a great table case I built that I normally use for busking, but my Gazzo cups wont fit into it, and it has a soft closeup pad on top, so I want to put this table together primarily for cups and balls. Thanks BroDavid

You wont be sorry to be doing the rings Frank.
I have so much fun with the rings, that I have held off on putting the cups into my act. And just for a bit of extra comedy I recently added the Quardo Vicious barbed wire rings as a warm up to Capehart inspired routinue. I hand out three ordinary rings to have them examined, and then decide we need more danger, so after all three are fully examined, I put them in my case, and put on my gloves and go into the Seabrooke like comedy routine with the barbed wire rings. Then after the finally, are linked, I say "now that you know I am a man not afraid of danger, and I put the barbed wire aware, and retake the regular rings (except I now grab the key and two rings) saying, now let me show you that I am a man of mystery as well as danger... and go into the three ring routine. People seem to really enjoy the barber wire rings. But there is no real climax there. So I still close with lots of audience participation and the regular three ring routine. Good choice on the number of rings too. Five gives you a good level of flexibility. BroDavid

Sorry, havent read through this topic, but have read your post at the top, Mandrake. Anyhow, I asked in one of the topics somewhere whether an ironing board could be used, and was told it wasn't going to work. A few months later I decided to invest in Cellini's Art of Street Performing (as some may remember, I wasn't particularly fussed on that DVD). Anyway, I noted that Cellini himself had played about with an ironing board. My point here is that you can probably use ANYTHING that you think will work.

Bro David/ I got the idea from a camping shop table, wasn't into using metal though I made mine out of wood, 6 pieces of wood 2 inch wide and 2,1/2 foot long approx it is attached to the table using velcro which stops movement, cups and balls are no worries on it as it is very sturdy ,, (I bash my wand on the table quite hard when I emphasize a point).
Cstreet/ Many years ago I used an ironing board and found it very successful for stopping a crowd as people were intrigried by an ironing board in the street, Very large to carry around though, I like to be portable (all my stuff fits in a backpack now). p.s. before my roll up I have used all different things including cupboard doors and coffee table tops, when the cloth gos on no-one knows any different. It's interesting going through customs with a cupbord door, or an ironing board though !!! Nick |
