I though of something, looking at so many magic shows, I think I can conclude that every magician is also a comedian. It is hard for a magician to be a magician without being somewhat of a comedian. Being funny is one way to get the audiance to get glued to you. Well the way I see it is, that is true with every magician, atleast up to a certain extent.

The main thing for an entertainer is to have the audience wrapped around your finger right from the start.
There are some magicians that have subtle humor now and then and there are some who prefer to not have any at all...then there are us funny guys. Humor can loosen up a crowd very quickly, but so can a completely mystical magician. Let's say your doing a trick...sawing a lady in half. This trick can be played to an audience in both manners and be quite successful. For us, being the silly ones, we can always use the comedy escape if a trick is going bad. You do need to give the respect to a completely straight magician. If a trick goes bad for him, he's in quite a jam, but professionally can smoothly bypass the error. Funny is a great thing to have and this place is the best place to be if youre a dabbler, novice, pro or just Dad making your kids happy with the wonderful world of magic. I love Comedy magic |

I have to disagree with your statement.
David Blaine Shimada Jeff Sheridan (70's performance have not seen him in recent years)) Mr. Electric 4 off the top of my head... These folks do not have any humor in their acts at all. Unless you think producing a small unbrella after a series of large unbrellas is funny. Which actually is nice and cute but not funny. So No there are many magicians out there that are not funny thank God....I wish some of the ones who try to be funny weren't.... Nor do I find folks who add a few lines that are humorous such as Max Maven does in his show are humourous but not comdic. Some of his humorous lines are there to entertain folks... you can't fill an hour show without effecting certian emotions, thus for me their's a line drawn from comic humor and entertaining lines that my be humorous. |

Although people might laugh during my show I am not there to make them laugh. I'm their to entertain and do magic. I’m not saying don’t tell jokes but it is the magic that makes me who I am. We can use jokes and comedy to entertain but we're magicians and yes we sometimes do tell jokes. But then how are we different from Bill Cosby, the Three Stooges and other comedians? Because we do magic. There are magicians that are comedians and comedians that are magicians but I call myself a magician. So if you want to call yourself a comedian you can but I, am a magician.

I'd have to go with the idea that every magician is supposed to be an entertainer, but I don't know if I could agree that every one is a comedian. All may use some light humor, but that hardly qualifies as being a comedian.

For whatever it is worth, Dai Vernon said that magic is inherently funny and that most magicians should not attempt to be comedians. After hearing him say that long ago, I have never forgotten it.

I think you need to be born funny theres people who say funny things and theres people who say things funny its a gift whats funny to one person doesn't mean its funny to someone else look at the greats laurel and hardy marx bros and more there humour is timless after 50 years you still laugh these are the greats but I cant get the wife to laugh at them mind you if I got the wife to laugh at anything now that would be funny

I am going to have to disagree with having to be born funny bit.
I had the great pleasure in talking to a few great comedian's and a couple have said that they had to learn to be funny, it took them years. One said that their Brother is naturally funny and he was the serios one. 20 years later you would never think that he would become the comedy writer/comedian. I think it just takes more work, more so them most magicians are willing to give because lets face it as magicians we have lots to do (tricks: learning moves, sleights, Stage movement: misdiection, Body Lanuage, then add tell jokes and patter) I have yet to see a young magician wanting to learn all that plus try to add being funny. It's HARD WORK! cheers chris |
