You could do a lot worse than "Expert at the Card Table".

In the DVD category....

If you are looking for a broad range of palming techniques, I learned much from "Carney On Palming." As it's the only DVD I have seen dedicated to the topic, I can't compare it to others.

For great detail and instruction on the Erdnase Top Palm, I would go with Steven Youell Teaches Advanced Card Techniques."

Lennart Green DVDs or his booklet Snap Deal. There is only one palm but it is great, the lateral palm.
Expert at the Card Table has great palms but I do not say they specialize in palming.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Admittedly, the book may not "specialize" in palming, but it offers top, bottom, and center palms that are cutting edge more than a century after it was written. I think the $5 (or whatever) paperback version of Erdnase has more great palming info in it than anything else of comparable price.

If I had to chose a video source, I guess I'd say Mike Close's "The Power of Palming", which teaches, among other things, the Erdnase bottom palm and a variation of the diagonal palm shift (also from Erdnase).

Try to find some pamphlets or books by Arturo de Ascanio. He was a master of palming and the handling of double cards.

I second Jordan's post above. I have seen Bob's early takes and they look great. This will be a DVD to get no matter how long you have been palming cards. Bob gets down to it. Lance D.

The Michael Close Palming video is VERY good, but it only talks about one palm (I believe it's the diagonal palm shift).
However, instead of just looking for a good palming source, find a trick that you want to learn that has some palming in it. (Travelers from Stars of Magic, a card to pocket, etc.). When you decide on a trick, then find the best places to learn the palm, or palms, it uses.
Think of palms (or any sleights for that matter) as a tool in your toolbox. Learning a sleight for the heck of it is kind of like buying a power saw at Home Depot because it's a cool tool. If you do this, you end up with a lot of tools in your garage you don't really use and you've wasted a lot of money. Sleights are the same way. I would recommend only learning a new sleight when you have a use for it in a certain trick. This way you will really learn it, AND you will have learned it correctly in the proper context of the bigger picture.

Newtonjj, you are incorrect about Michael Close's Palming video. He uses and explains more than one palm. And in fact, does not use the diagonal palm shift at all but a version of LePaul's left-hand diagonal palm.

However, Close's palming covers left-handed palms. In these palms, the cards are stolen from somewhere OTHER than the top of the deck. That makes them easier to cover and certainly is a good place for newbies to start building their confidence in palming. Much of the material on the video/DVD is also covered in his Workers 3 book, in case you want to cross reference.

Regarding DVDs, one source that hasn't been mentioned yet is John Carney's Power of Palming. Though I haven't seen the DVD, it has been favorably reviewed by most, and again here, a chunk of the material can be found in print. Carney's Book of Secrets (which I have read) has a chapter on palming that's well worth taking a look at, not to mention the beautiful routines included.

Both the Carney and Close video are good. I'd give the Close video a sleight edge for beginners.

May I recommend Daryl's EOCS vol. 6. Quite a thorough, if not brief discourse on palming.

Check out Jerry Sadowitz's Jog Palm in Cards On The Table. It's nice and clean.

I would skip the DVD's and the video's and go back to the basics. Erdnase Expert at the card table has a great chapter on palming. Also Expert Card Technique has the basics for these important card moves.

After learning the palm of choice work out the move by doing it for people with impromptu shows or formal close up shows.

I hope this helps.

I'm going to have to disagree with Bish.
The good dvds and videos DO go back to the basics.

It's not like they're teaching the "swivel sybil ninja palm"
or the "black tiger deck-o-matic get the girls now palm"
or the "levitate-to-procreate stealth penguin palm"

I just ordered carney's DVD to pick some more ideas on the DPS
and I don't have that one yet. But I did have the Michael
Close video from years ago and I think there are some
very beneficial things:

1. It shows very clearly the palming position
2. It shows very clearly how to "look natural" while holding out
3. It shows very clearly how to "get into it" and how to "get out of it"
4. It shows very clearly how smooth it needs to look.

4 is especially important as one might not realize just how
naturally and smoothly the moves need to be carried out.
This puts you miles ahead, if you're new to palming.

reading books are wonderful for tricks becuase you automatically
put your own spin on the presentation in the book regardless of
how detailed the presentation is in the book.

but for a move that is so important and so useful,
go for the DVD. I think the best value in DVDs are the ones
that are very detailed about one thing, even if it's a trick.

Fiber Optics
Shell Game
Fast and Loose
Linking Rings
3 Card MOnte
The Pass
Palming

The only DVDs I think are a waste are the encyclopedia style.
I learned my lesson the hard way. I still get a tear in my eye
every time I think about the great videos I traded away for
an encyclopedia of xxxxxx.

*bangs head against wall*

When I want to learn something new, e.g. Rings, I buy everything
I can afford and watch them all.

Goes with the "learn one thing and learn it well" philosophy.

Now that I agree with.
And I wish more would as well.

Imagine how quickly a magician could get "good" and how much money they would save if they really studied a classic book or really studied a responsible DVD
as opposed to running of to buy the latest "cool trick" from penquin every week.

erdnase is what? $10 tops?
power of palming is probably close to the same for a used copy.
