My hands get kinda shaky sometimes when I perform. The strange thing is though, I am completely confident about performing and all of the patter and presentation goes normally. I have no difficulties whatsoever, but my hands just shake. I do it without even realizing it. Can anyones suggest some techniques to deal with this.

Is it a small shake or a larger shake? Sometimes my hands get a small shake so I'll have to keep up with this topic and see what people say. I know what you're feeling..

I also get shaky hands sometimes. Although we might feel comfortable and confident the jitters still get to us. Just try to relax and some good deep breaths. It lessens the shakiness of the hand.

We all have had this happen, usually when we are just starting !
I'm not sure if it isn't just excitment rather than nerves. Just keep working and it will go away. It helps to start with a trick you know very well and one that can't go wrong. Relax, (its easy to say). Spend a short time talking to the spectators before starting the trick, and work as slowly as you can. And keep looking at them. |

It is a result of performance anxiety. You get hyper or up when you perform, your flight or fight mechanism is triggered and your body is flooded with adrenalin. You shake because you are hyped on adrenalin. You need to relax and have some calm time just prior to performing, I'd advise staying from any form of stimulant like caffine several hours before performing, also don't go out with a totally empty stomach. Even being confident with the trick you are still apprehensive it won't go over well or you will got caught. So what, they catch you, or it doesn't go over well. That happens to everybody, even the pros. Just learn to be calm and not let worry about flubbing get to you.

Also STOP LOOKING AT YOUR HANDS!! If you are looking at your specs face and eyes , the tremors dissipate.

Do routines where you have to talk to the spec, ask questions and get a responce, play up to a spec involving him, this also takes the heat of you, but this is not why you do it.. You create entertainment by involving a spec, all the other specs are shifting their attention between you and your *playmate/girl* and this furthermore is an advantage to built up the needed misdirection during some handlings. Apart from this, don't worry.. I've -many years back- seen a worldclass, well know US-Tradshowperformer doing his routines incredibly well, but with very visibly shaking hands..and that guy had all the experience and routine re performing in the world.. I don't know if he still is with us, I haven't heared his name mentioned for a very long time, but let me assure you, he is/was a VERY routined performer that did his stuff continuously and all the time..amongst other things he was well known for his 3 Ring Routine, which also was a thing of beauty.. Maybe he got nervous because he performed at a FISM in front of solely fellow magicians, I don't know..but one never would have expected he would get this problem.. Albert Goshman too, when attenting a Stevens Las Vegas competition -for a money price- got shaky hands, and that was after he for many years had been a working pro with all the success in the world.. Our own Pete Biro did report with sadness this incident in Genii.. The above just to let you know, it obviously can happen to anybody, so I suppose one can just do ones job as often as possible so one is not any longer concentrating on ones own person, but participating in the fun one is trying to create, to entertain the specs and have the fun with THEM...when laughing *with them*, there is no time for shaking hands..they don't exist anymore under these circumstances I suppose...

It could be from an adrenaline rush. It happens to me a lot. I am used to be physical when infront of a crowd performing. So when I am doing magic it has no where to go except my making my hands shake.

I think your shaking is due to a lack of confidence of self. You shouldn't let anything make you nervous to the point of shaking. Now go back to the feelings you had when you were shaking and understand why you were nervous or excited. Work on some breathing techniques before you perform and maybe some stretching. Anything you can do to release some of the tension of performing miracles beforehand will make for a better performance.

It's not than I'm nervous or not confident. I just feel like I have so much energy and am so excited that the shaking just happens. Thanks for all your tips though, I'll have to try them out.

Some great advice in the above posts. What worked for me, as was mentioned, is to take the focus off of "YOU" and what "YOU" are doing. Rather interact and have a relationship ,so to speak, with your spectators. Like getting to know a new friend, ask general questions, then show them something that, you say, people realy enjoy seeing. People skills are of utmost importance. Yes, technical ability and confidence are important which you say you have. Just focus your attention on others and OFF OF YOU!! Your hands should stop shaking.

Njh,
I know what you are talking about and I have experienced it many times myself - usually in front of other magicians. I know that it is a confidence thing with me. But when I am doing shows for laymen, I almost always open with my favorite rope routine. I know it well, it has great patter, is fun, and always calms me down. It allows me to get a reading on the type of audience that I am performing for. When I am finished with the routine, I am calm, and I am confident that I know that I am presenting the proper material for the proper venue - in other words, the last thing I have time to think about is if I am nervous anymore! I hope that this helps, and don't worry, you will work your way through it.... Scott Compton

Sometimes I would get shaky hands and sometimes not, never a nice thing to see so, I use a HERBAL product that works fine. I used to appear in the court of law fairly frequently (on the side of the law) and it was suggested to me that I try this item as nerves can take a hold when performing there. The item is called KALMS. In the UK they are obtainable over the counter at Boots. I think the main ingrediant is seaweed. As I say, I take a couple of these and no shakes.

When I first got into magic, this happened to me. It disappears when you get more and more performing experience. However, if like me you leave the game for a while, it comes back! I'm in the process of getting rid of it again now! Keep at it

I do a gag with a paddle trick. I rest the end on the table and say, "You know why I do this (rest paddle on table)? If I didn't it would look like this (lift about an inch and start to SHAKE like a nervous idiot!) Get's a laugh and covers the shaking.

A lot of good advice here.
As long as your voice doesn't shake then you are fine. I've experienced handshaking mostly when I've been out drinking a little to much with my firends the day before - so I have avoided that when I have a show. Also handshaking and nerveousness seems to happen to mee when 1) I feel a bit rusty (haven't performed for a while), or 2) If I perform for friends and family I really care about (so I really want to succeed). I do as Compton adviced. I plan my first effect (actually the first 3 effects) up front to be effects I master completely. Then I get of to a good start and can ride on that feeling the rest of the act(s). Why are sponge balls such a popular opener with many - is it because it is really great magic? or is it because its a really easy way to start? I think mostly because its a safe way to start although it can also be good magic too. Sponges are a safe haven - if I feel nervous and performing at a standing reception I find a small group with two women, do a sponge ball routine in their hands (peanutt, Jelly and butter, by the great Scott - I like this routine because of it visually magical ending) and then I Jump into a rope routine or an ambitious card routine. Pete, I like your suggestion. Make a joke of it in the context of an effect and go on. Jan |

One should always figure out a way to turn a problem into a plus. Del Ray, for example, had a speach impedement... so he spoke like he came from Brooklyn... it covered it.
