I'm glad this thread got started. I for one hadn't heard much about the Al Schneider Technique DVD's. I ended up getting the first two just recently and was in awe. This type of teaching has been missed in videos and DVD's. He doesn't just teach clever tricks. The psycholgy behind magic is paramount to being a good entertainer.
Get his frist DVD, learn his basic vanish and then go try it. You'll be amazed at how different your magic is perceived. Chris

Magic mafia is a term Al and I have used for quite some time . My definition is more of a rant than is his. I would also never name names merely descriptions.
For me it is a group of incestuous mid famous magicians who seek the adulation of mere mortals such as myself and thousands like me (and you) Yet appear almost annoyed we exist. Often expecting deferential treatment and circled by a group who would sell their soul to join the group. Then again I may just be off my meds. Frank Tougas

MagicChris,
I have been in magic for quite a while and I am still oblivious to those that you describe. |

I would not boycott them, it isn't like they have a disease, they simply have more of an attitude of entitlement. Yes they can seem very friendly - even helpful, but they key is they watch out for their own and you "ain't gittin in that group."
No a problem for me. I picked my path long ago and would not change it for a minute. How it works is this - say you have discovered a new and innovative move and you are showing it to a few of the boys at a convention. A heavy hitter comes along and shows an interest - you are naturally flattered. A year or so later you see your move published under some name other than yours. Now members of the Magic Mafia know well where the move came from but will continue to "protect the authorship" by misquoting it time after time. If you are well known enough but not in the circle they may pay deference by putting two names on it, but will never make the correction. Haven't you ever wondered where all the material comes from when a book is published or a DVD released. True some are genius and actually come up with new items - most make "improvements" on other peoples work and can be a little lx about crediting. Unless the crediting goes to a member of the MM - then they are quite adamant about crediting the work. Even message boards can be co-opted by the MM. "Isn't there a place where we can talk without being bothered by all the 'what's the best this, or your favorite that' people on the board. Maybe an area where only WE can go and unknown by regular members. It has happened before. Now I'll try not to mention this group again as I don't want to wake up with a bloody horse head in my bed. Thanks zhuanan for starting this thread.
But to you other guys, hasn'e this thread gone off track? I would be happy to discuss some of this more. Even had some thoughts about something worthwhile. But here does not seem to be the place. It would be nice if someone that was interested started a thread somewhere else. I don't know where this would be. Perhaps Frank would repeat some of his comments there to get things going. But I think he should sofen his retoric a bit. Al Schneider

Dear Al Schneider:
I have bought you Al Schneider Technique DVD Vol 1, I think you theory part does make a lot of sense...I am trying to incorporate the "5 stages" theory in my act to see how it works. Thanks |

Zhuanan,
If you are serious in trying out A.Schneider's theory, get the rest of his DVDs. You'll see a better and clearer picture of how he incorporate his own theory in his close-up effects as well as his parlour's. |

Al,
I've been looking at your CD of pdfs. I understand both your dvds and pdf docs deals with theory and effects. Can you describe the differences between them for me? Not sure which will be best suited for me. Thanks. |

The rule is you can't double post the same material on another thread. So I will not only soften I'll pass altogether. Oh and by the way...the name is Smith.

I've had these dvds for 7 years? Time goes by so fast.
You can get the book Al Schneider Magic ( L&L Publishing ) and learn it all. If you're not a book reader, then get these dvds. They're unlike any you've seen. I refer back to these often. We all have our favorite performers/teachers. You learn how to do sleight on the offbeat, during a joke/laughter, etc. Al Schneider is different. He does the magic and it looks like it just happens. I've been getting L&L videos ( now dvds ) since they first came out, so I know their audience. They reacted so differently on this set. Al performed "Serpent String" which blew them away. A young lady named Tania, who at the time worked at L&L and saw A LOT of magic, excitedly said "I've never seen that before". The magic is so strong, that when Al would go to another trick, they would all still be talking about the last one and he'd have to wait. If you get this set, you'll start performing differently. You'll become better at presenting your magic. |

I am really enjoying the DVDs, especially the theory and the teaching of Volume 1. It covers so much important stuff like what happens in the spectators mind while and after the illusions happen. Great value!
I was wondering, is there much more new information in the book than the dvds? Because for example the stages of deception are also covered in the book as I can see from the index. |

You are correct in saying Max Maven is very serious about the proper crediting of effects and the historic thread of invention. That does not make him a part of any 'Magic Mafia' as he does not hesitate to correct all those misappropriated credits. He is the first to recognize stolen ideas and the sources of all those tired rehashes.
