Hey,
Currently I perform Jumping Gemini by Darwin Ortiz, and was wondering if anyone else does this effect? What kind of reactions do you get? At the end of the routine when you show all the kings, I changed it up so I show all blank cards, is this a good idea or should I switch back to regular face cards? thanx greydon

Well, like we discused, the blank backs make it an oddity, and people are going to want to look.
Also, theyll suspect that the cards arnt normal (which if your using blanks they won't be) and, finally, you have no place to ditch it to. Jumping Gemini goes back onto the deck, a quick shuffle, and then you go into your next trick. You don't have to move fast or be worried about ditching the evidence, but you don't want to leave the cards on the table, which is why the origonal is so good. Personally, all the cards being kings seems way stronger then them all being blank anyway.

I personally prefer to show regular face cards since it takes the heat off the pack. I also tried using blank cards and notice more spectators wishing to inspect the cards. I guess this is because spectators are not use to seeing blank or non-standard cards and want to touch them. In my opinion, the effect is much stronger when performing it with regular cards since it looks less fishy than blanks. Also, you can perform it impromptu if someone hands you a deck. I hope this information helps.
Kind regards, Rich

Greydon, I love this effect. Check out Michael Ammar's version of it, where it starts out as a 4 ace routine (in fact you can precede the trick with a 4 ace effect like twisting the aces, then segue into this). I agree with others that the face cards have a nice contrast at the end. Jumping Gemini in my opinion is strong card magic. Darwin Ortiz is simply amazing for thinking this one out. Make sure they see you have only 4 cards at the finish before shuffling in or switching ... but if they accidentally see the cards at the end (like my wife) ... it's still an amazing effect.

How about trying it with two identical jokers? (I have an 'issue' with showing the same two kings again.)

Hey,
Thanks everyone for your input, I like your idea Roger, with the jokers I may try that and if it doesn't work I will go back to kings. thanks, greydon

Just out of curiosity, why the issue with the Kings?

I've never had problems with the kings.
Darwin has a beautiful way of covering them: It's an after thought. The strange thing about this trick is all it uses is one, two, three, four kings. Done.

I used to use Jumping Gemini, but switched to David Regal's "Cheating." Its a very similar effect, quite a bit longer, and has a nice kicker to it. It starts off as a twisting the aces sort of effect, then all the cards change to jokers, then to kings, and then the cards you started with are in the box and the middle of the deck. Its quite a blast.

(Why show a supposed 'four of a kind' after previously showing four identicals?) And, if its good enough for Frank Starsini, then its good enough for me. (Thanks Frank - great minds etc! ) Its all a matter of personal taste of course and I'm certainly not saying that four (or two!) kings isn't any good - but just try it with the jokers, you may be impressed. (The only downside is, if using Tallys or Bikes is that you have to get another identical joker from another deck - picture joker in the case of Tallys and, as in my case, the non-guarantee joker with Bikes. I always felt that all the faces vanishing and going completely white was a very magical event. Perhaps I need to re-examine things and go back to square one. As for the effect itself, I have had a lot of fun and created quite a lot of amazement with the it. The only problem is that their are so many steps to remember in this, that if you put it down for a while, (A week or two) you forget the order of the steps and end up have to relearn it all over again.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

First off, yes you should re-examine because most trick with blank cards, the audience DOES want to see the cards.
That is why in things like BWave and Blizzard, the blank cards end examinable. In other tricks like fadeout, even though the blank cards are gaffed, you still can show each card in the deck to the audience, so they will FEEL like they have examined every card. For jumping gemini, probably just a flash of all 4 cards being blank would be enough to quell a curious spectator and stop them from wanting to see the cards... but since you are showing 1 at a time, then as soon as you ring in a "special" card, they will want to see all the cards, and all the faces at the same time, at least IMHO. Anyway, perhaps you could keep a notebook of the sequence or just keep practicing it(or just improv the sequences because many leave you in a position to repeat another set)... Get it into your muscle memory and you can go a month or so without any problems. Your other option is to just perform the effect everytime you perform card magic, its a great effect and well worth it! |

Does anyone follow up the trick with anything?
I like to cull 2 kings to the bottom, do jumping gemini and then I have 2 cards on top and two on the bottom. From there I can shuffle and reproduce them again. Yet the whole process seems anti climactic compared to the magic in the previous segment. Gregory Wilson produces the four kings from his pockets but does anyone have any good ideas for a climax that uses that has no set up? Let me know if I'm thinking too hard about it.... If the trick ends there is there a favourite way to bring all the kings together for someone who requests the cards for examination? |

I use the two jokers at the end, and talk about how jokers are the only true "wild cards" in the deck, which means that they can turn into any card you want. I also keep 2 extra jokers on the top of the deck. Then, when I put the four cards back on the deck, the 2 indifferent cards go on the bottom and the 2 jokers go on top of the other 2 jokers...that way if anyone gets grabby and goes for the deck, all they'll find is four jokers.

I use the Kings but I do like the Jokers idea also. I really want to check out David Regal's "Cheating". Is it on a video or in a book? Thanks.
