New to me, but how long before Ian McColl devises some ingenious master-override key or set?

I think the relatively high price will probably limit their use to prisoner transport, and I could definitely see the US Marshal Service adopting them.

Hi The gotcha cuffs have been out there for a while but due to resisted access, those who really want them for escape work hadn't got a pair. Chris Gower in England has formulated a tool which he believes will work and I have deleveloped another style of tool. Both agree that the others tool has merit and should work. I have had access to real size photos of the cuffs to made my tool. Only when the cuff because available to escape artoists will we know for sure. Apart from by pass tools, the key is not a worry.

regards

Ian

I just caught their web site about a week ago. Did anyone notice the "unpickable" or "pick proof" statement that they made over and over in their sales pitch? I think that the makers of this cuff are just asking for it! What do you think Ian? I would love to see exactly how pick proof they really are. They do not look like they would give the Chubb Escort cuffs a run for their money. What do you guys think? Mike

I hope to have my hands on a pair within a couple of months. Though I do believe there is such a thing as an, "unpickable" cuff, after looking at the drawings, I don't believe these are them. Just my opinion. I'll find out soon, I hope.

I wanted to say too that I agree with Dr Midnight that they are too pricey and even worst, they don't take a standard key. I think the special key will do them in.

As to picking them, I hope to be able to do so via traditional methods. If not, I have to believe a warmed/softened pen case (or another plastic cylinder more to the size) would do the trick! Smile

Hi Michael, the term pick proof should have been outlawed years ago. In Australia it is, the word Proof is only used in conjunction with alchol. Pick resistance is the phrase and it is the amount of time required to pick the lock which dictates, low security, or high security. The UL rating for High security means that they have to defy 10 minutes of hand and machine picking. I don't beleiev there is this type of rating for handcuffs, only the overall security as per the NIJ rating systems. I need to read up it again.

If you read their statement carefully, it doesn't say they can't be picked ... it reads "... handcuffs and restraints that can not be picked, or jimmied or opened with a standard key", which when broken down says:

(1) can not be picked with a standard key.
(2) can not be jimmied with a standard key.
(3) can not be opened with a standard key.

I would say their statement is correct - their cuffs can't be picked with a standard key, but then again ... the idea of pick locking is to open them without a key. But that doesn't mean they can't be picked.

If the cuffs are unpickable. does that mean they are unescapable. as Well ?

Unescapable? No way! There are a few handcuffs that border on pickproof, for example, the Chubb Escort, the CuffMax, and the Ian McColl Houdini Mirror cuffs with the Bramah cylinder. However, there have been a number of escape artists that have escaped from these cuffs. In all of these cases, I would be willing to bet that the escape artists didn't pick the locks open, but rather found some other slippery way out. After all, an escape artist is one part magician, one part locksmith, one part theater actor, and one part con man....with all of these skills at our disposal, NO HANDCUFFS ARE UNESCAPABLE! We always find a way out! Keep on escaping! Mike

I have to agree with Michael. I just received my set of Bramah Mirror Cuffs from Ian, and I have to agree, they MUST be unpickable. Apart from the Bramah Lock, which is a problem in itself, Ian has added an "extra bonus" which completely dis-allows any direct accesss to the Bramah mechanism. I won't spoil the surprise here, but if you have a set, you'll know what I mean.

They are now pride of place in my collection, and I can't praise Ian enough.

If you can afford it, get a set!

(This is not a paid commercial for Ian, just another person praising his workmanship!)

Mick, they are a thing of beauty, aren't they? I hope to one day own a pair myself. These particular cuffs are a true icon in the world of escapology. Mike

Hi Mark,

I'm guessing you are talking about the Gotcha cuffs, the message went in another direction after that about the McColl Mirror cuff and since I know you know where to get those I just wanted to help straighten your message up.

We all know Mark's favorite cuff is the Darby.
