I'm looking for some info on those who perform this in their show. It seems like it could be a GREAT illusion! Can it be done with a solid piece of chain? Also can a light be used for a shadow effect as you walk through it? Any information on the performing this would be great! thanks guys......

Lance Richardson, who has designed for Creative Illusions and Paul Haynes, has a new rope penetration called The Web.
Here is what it is: A 50' foot rope that is examined by two audience volunteers is woven inside of a frame, back and forth looking similar to a web. The performer is upstage of the frame and the now woven "web". The ends comes out with about 12' left on each end. The ends are tied around the performers wrists and then held onto and pulled downstage by the volunteers. Now a cloth is handed to the performer and he raises it up to shoulder height, 3 seconds later he lowers it and is now downstage of the web..or having now passed thru the web. The things to point are the performers hands are tied with the same rope he will be passing thru. No f**e hands are used and the performers hands are visible at all times, as well as, never let go of the cloth. The rope can be examined as well as the frame. In my opinion, after seeing this illusion worked on and performed with first hand, it is a huge leap in the walking thru a rope illusion. Initial video for marketing it has been shot. I know there are some final things that are being worked on before it hits the market. I personally will be unveiling it at the Escape Artists Convention in October in Ontario, CA, as part of Living Illusions, along with Kristen Johnson. We are on the headliners show there, with Dean Gunnarson, Mark & Sheila Cannon and Robert Baxt. I will keep you posted here at the Café on it's release date. Kevin

Sounds like a great routine! What do you think the price tag will be on this? Just curious....

I do Houdini' Walking Through A Rope from Device & Illusion. The effect is that you have a base (not like a deceptive base or anything) with 2 wooden poles about 5" in diameter. The rope is already threaded through the 2 holes in the post before the prop is brought on. Two male spectators are asked to examine everything, and both hold onto one end of the rope very tightly, they can actually pull it back and forth too. I stand in front of rope and pull a black silk and and wlk right through it.
I love it. It gets great resonses and when you have the advantage to bring people up on stage and inspect, and be a part of the show, it's a wonderful thing. |

I perform the Houdini's Rope illusion as well and it does get a great response in my show. Just be careful to control the people pulling the ropes that they don't pull too hard!!!!

They are 2 different things (from what I get out of the description). Walking Through A Rope is an illusion, meaning that there is an apparatus. I don't think Hang Em High uses that genre of magic. I think Hang Em High is like Tabary's rope routine.

Hang 'em high is a rope through body not a walking through a rope.

Everyone should have Device and Illusion. When you order it from Jim Steinmeyer, in the comments section ask him to sign it. I got mine and it was signed!

I have a "Houdini's Rope" prop made from Device and Illusion. It's in excellent condition. I'm not using it and would be willing to sell it. PM me if interested.
Device and Illusion is a book you absolutely should be familiar with. It's not necessarily about specific illusions as much as it is about concepts and principles that you can expand upon and help you understand the craft better. -JH Correction to my post above as I re-read it, it doesn't say what I meant. It IS about specific illusions. What I meant was, the most important thing to take away is the concepts even if you do not want to use the specific illusions described. Although they are very good, my point was that you need to know it for the background knowledge regardless of the specific illusions. -JH
Did you see that?

Michelangelo (magic works) makes a really cool walking through ropes illusion. Check it out at: http://illusionist.net/works_pillars.htm
Hope this helps. |

Andrew Mayne's walking through barbwire could just as easily be walking through rope... although barbwire is much more dangerous.

Can anyone offer more information on "The Web"? Or do I have to keep waiting? I love what I hear thus far...

You can order the web from Jack Murray at Dream Illusions. I believe the illusion is about $1200.00 - $1300.00. And Jack's work is amazing. His "No Bolt" assembly can't be beat.

I built a Houdinis Rope out of Device and Illusion....Worked very well and the response was double what I expected from something so simple. Was fun to build.
