I am working on making a Library Show, and the theme is, What You Can Find At Your Library. The question I have is, do all tricks or routines need to be linked to the theme, such as I could not do a trick that I let's say "read in a book" and then perform it? Does the trick need to finish with it relating to the library or with a moral?
Thanks, Gideon
You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

I do lots of library shows but my theme is always the same "look at the silly juggler, magician kids". This really sounds like a question for Ken Scott.

Thanks Al, IMO I think the theme is important. I think if you can put together routines that co inside with the theme then you will be ahead of the other performers. .
To answer your question not every routine needs to link the theme. Just make it entertaining yet let it fit the library reading theme. Look at books that are hot and "READ THEM" and find out what the book is talking about then tie in a trick that will fit the book. I have several routines that reading themed routines http://www.kenscottproducts.com Steve taylor has several reading show routines that would fit well. Librarians like when you tie into their theme and promote reading, this is very important to performing for a long time in the library market. Ken |

Steve Taylor's Pamphlets have proved valuable to me.
I love to create themed shows. In fact in about 15 minutes I will be going to a Magic of Reading Program. Fiction versus Non Fiction might be an approach. One librarian I know suggested using a book about Gorrillas(sic) In the fictional book, the white gorilla is of the wrong sex. White gorillas are only m or f, I can't remember at this moment which. She also has a huge white gorilla that she uses to tell her story. There are many I want to be a ... juggler, magician, rodeo clown...that one could work up routines with. One magic number is 793.8 Another is 792.5 another kids like is 741.5 anyone know what books go with the above numbers? A no prize to the first identifier. Just some quick thoughts by, Harris

Well, 793.8 is the Indoor Amusments section that deals with Magic, so any book there would fit; 792.5 is Opera, so my guess is "The Magic Flute"; and 741.5 is cartooning do how about "Bob Ross Magic of Drawing"?
Azrael Bet you'd never have thought to see ME in this catagory... LOL

Gideon,
No, not all the tricks need to revolve exactly around their theme, that would get preachy and there's no quicker way to turn off a kid to magic! Chris |

Whenever I work a library I use the presentation of finding "magic" at your local lirary. This does two things, it gaurentees that every book on magic in the library will be borrowed, secondly, it plants a seed that might blossom into a future conjuror.

I always make it a point to use and refernce books through out the show as well as have the librarian pull the books I mention as well as the magic books and display them on a table near the performing area. This gets the kids excited and can take out the books following the performance.

The better the show itself is coherent and logical the more the audience will understand it and stay tuned. You can't just perform some tricks and say, "Hey, I learned this one in a book." Doesn't work that way. Call your librarian and ask what they expect. Go and watch a performer at a library near you and see what's up. They hired him/her 'cause they liked their message. John |

Think about linking tricks to popular books...abiyoyo is a book that depicts a magician and his magic wand...my wand matches his...my version of tail spin naturally leads to a discussion about my favourite donkey character and so on
