Why does it always taste like Starbucks takes the beans during roasting and burns them to oblivion, then charge $4 for a cup of burnt coffee?
Thoughts? Andy |

Buy low, sell high. If you think their coffee is bad, you should try my wife's.
On second thought, maybe not.

Why do people go to Starbucks where they burn the coffee beans to oblivion and pay $4 a cup? Starbucks does it because, apparently, few of their customers seem to care. Why don't they care? I have no clue.

I would get $10 Starbucks gift certificates for coaching a girls soccer team. I would joke with fake excitement, "Hey, I can get 2 cups of coffee with this!"

I have never seen a $4.00 cup of coffee at Starbucks so I can't comment on that. Some of their large (Grande) specialty coffee's such as Mocha's, Cappuccino’s and those candy bar flavors do approach the $4.00 price but I have seen those same prices at other coffee joints all around the country. As far as regular coffee and Espresso's go, the prices are pretty much the same as anywhere else quality coffee is sold.
As far as burnt beans? I don't have a clue to what you are talking about. The Starbucks that I have visited (probably half a dozen) all have great coffee and I have not tasted any that had a burnt bean taste or a sour taste. While Starbucks is great coffee so is Seattle's Best and a few other brands whose names evade me at the moment. It is my opinion that Starbucks consistently makes a great cup of coffee but so do many other companies. Starbucks has a "standard" way of brewing their coffee and measuring their ingredients for their specialty coffee's that are not supposed to be deviated from just as McDonald's and many other franchises, therefore keeping a level of consistency in the quality and taste of their products so no matter which store you go to you know what to expect. Sounds to me like your experience was at a store that did not adhere to company standards. Maybe you are only familiar with coffee's like Folger's or coffee at Denny's and are not aware of what a really good cup of Java tastes like. I do agree that Starbucks and many other good coffee joints charge more than a McDonald's or Denny's but then again you are getting a much better cup of brew. Iven

Iven,
FYI, I happen to go out of my way to visit independently/privately owned coffee houses. I believe in Small Business and think they are more important than the shareholders of Starbucks. Starbucks does roast thier beans to a certain consistency that is above what others do. I happen to think it makes the coffee more bitter. Andy |

Also, what do you have against shareholders of an American company? WARNING: Slippery Slope... Remember, ENRON and Halliburton are American companies as well! Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I highly recommend Starbuck's chocolate drink - "Chantico". |

Iven,
Nowhere in Andy's post does he appear to be upset. Nor did he intimate that he didn't like it when others drink coffee at Starbucks - nowhere near. Nor did he state that he had anything against SB shareholders, but preferred to support the privately owned businesses, clearly preferring to support private owners in a more direct fashion than shareholders who are unknown to him. All perfectly reasonable.

Actually the store is suppose to refresh
the drip coffee makers every 30 mins I believe. If they aren't then the coffee is just sitting there being reheated. If the coffee is heated longer, or re-warmed it changes the chemistry of the coffe. Therefore the taste changes.

When someone starts a statement with "FYI (for your information)" in the context of the rest of the writing I take that as sarcasm and maybe it is just me but I sense a bit of anger in his style of writing but then again that is just my opinion. Andy also say's: "I believe in Small Business and think they are more important than the shareholders of Starbucks". More important? That sounds to me like he has something against Starbuck Stockholders. You are correct, Andy did not say he had anything against anyone drinking coffee at Starbucks this is my interpetation and was more of a question to Andy. I never said that he said this. I still stand by my statement and feelings on this matter. The bottom line here is that none of this really matters anyway. I don't care and I am sure that Starbucks don't care if Andy enjoys their coffee or not. Andy has a right to do what he wants. It just sounded to me that he had more negative feelings toward Starbucks, Big Business and the Stockholders of Big Business than one would expect from someone who is not taking this too serious or being upset.
