Hi,
I'm curious about dice stacking. Does this use gimmicks or gaffs to achieve the effect or is it pure skill.

Pure skill.
Take a wander around the Café, you'll find stackers all around you.

Thanks Dave. Is dice stacking part of your magic show?

Running up a quick couple of stacks is a great ice breaker for me and impresses on the viewer that I am a man of some skill perhaps greater than they first realized causing them to pay closer attention to the pack of cards I introduce next.
I wouldnt mind doing a "routine" with dice stacking but Ive never really seen one doing much more than ringing in a larger die for the finish, which is good. Maybe run the dice and then they're gone, flip the cup into the lining of your jacket and you finish clean. Frank and Pete are the two experts around here for dice stacking and Frank sells the real dice and cups you need. It's a lot of fun, looks good and establishes you as a skillful performer and gives you a chance to yak it up with the audience. It is a skill that can be easily learned with the right instruction but it does require the right type of cup and dice. -=tabman

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not sure if I want to delve into dice stacking more. As of now I just want to watch it being performed.

I have used a very simple dice stacking routine as part of opening my close-up and parlor performances. I am not currently using it.
My chief performing personna is timeless monk who collects stories and spiritual insights across generations. The monologue lines are: "Every since the beginning of recorded time, humanity has asked the difficult questions, 'Who am I?', 'Why am I here?', 'What is the meaning of life?' To aid their journey communities often sought the counsel of the wise among them. Men and women whom they gave names like priest, sage, and shaman. Sometimes those guides were chosen by the luck of the lot (magically produce a die rolling it onto the table from a once empty hand), .... sometimes because they demonstrated unexpected skill (stack dice in four full sweeps producing three more dice for a stack of four), .... and sometimes they were con artists who perfomed the "impossible" and claimed powers beyond their own (vanish the dice using Mullica techinique during a second stacking run). I am a gatherer of their stories and teller of their tales, whether I weave my work or aid your journey by luck and skill (roll out dice) and con is only yours to judge. (vanish cup to servante)"

If I recall, Charlie verbally credited Mullica for the vanish on his DVD.

Yes, that move is why I had Mike Rogers make me a cup without the raised trim ring found on most of his dice cups. Mike was nice enough to oblige and generous in his suggestions.
My orignal intention was to use the chopped dice cup to move on to a chop cup routine with a parchment paper wad rolled up and tossed into the cup. I never liked the transition, however, because it always felt like it was the lingering death of a strong defining opening. I found it better to move on to something completely different.

Dice stacking can be easy, or quite difficult. I don't think I will ever perform it, because I don't think I will ever get 100% with it. I am currently learning two things. Stacking with both hands at same time, and decapitating with both hands at same time.
Stacking is very fun, and looks like pure magic.

Stacking with both hands isn't too difficult. Decapitating with both hands is the hardest thing I have ever attempted in magic. It is very very difficult. I will tell you guys when I have it down though. I think I will get... hopefully. Again though, I don't plan on doing any stacking in a routine, so it is not my main concern. Never the less, I will continue practicing.

If you've ever wanted a tremendous entertaining, layman friendly
routine to work on and you've never found one. I'm about to make them available. Best routine, I've ever seen. They will be packaged with my new dice cups. If you're interested in the routine, it's now on my website.

I'm really intrested in Dice Stacking. I am familar with how the stacking is done. But I have a couple of questions for the experts if I may:
1. What is a good source for learning how to "steal" dice from under the cups while stacking. I know Sen. Crandall has a nice booklet and there are some videos out. But where can I get the basic instruction along with this technique? 2. Frank, I really like your cups and have had my finger on that "buy now" button more than once. But I am just not ready to pull the trigger yet. What do you recommend to use in lieu of a nice Pressly Guitar or one of your cups to start? A Yahtzee cup? Any cup with no inside lip? Please advise. Thanks, Vandy

What do you mean by "steal the dice"? One at a time or all at once? All at once, for a vanish, is simple, just lift the cup as you move toward your other hand, which is resting on the table, let the dice fly and go under the waiting hand as the cup slides back away from the hand and stops. Lift the cup and THEY ARE GONE.
Been doing that for 30 years or so.

Pete, I've seen a guy steal the dice with the same hand he was shaking the cup with. One at a time. At least that what he appeared to be doing.
