I'm going to suggest we stay out of the belief side of how things started because without outside data, all can have based upon measurements is a THEORY. Confidence levels aside, there is still nothing that prevents one from comfortably believing that all of existence was set into motion a week ago Tuesday and will itself come to an end next Thursday right before lunch.
We are left to check our assumptions in the riddle as stated. 1) How can you know that something is a chicken egg? 2) How can you know that something is a chicken? I was going to suggest something clever earlier and when I hit the submit button I got an error 12. Ah well, feel free to answer 1 and 2 above and/or continue on as you were. Enjoy.

This is kind of off the question but--some of my students told me their chickens (they live rurally) laid green eggs (shells were green-tinted). This is true although I would not advise eating the egg. The egg is a fertile egg where the embrio has died and subsiquently gone into decomposition thus tinting the egg green. As I have said, DO NOT EAT THESE! I would also advise not to open them unless you have a strong stomach. Lets look at eggs!!! In fact lets look at REPTILES, reptiles are related to avians but are an older order, they share the same methods of fetilisation and production of eggs as birds. Before reptiles were amphibians, the difference between amphibian and reptile egg is the outer shell. The reptile evolved a hard outer egg shell to withstand the demands of land whereas the amphibian evolved a soft gel egg that could be externaly fertilised. The chickin is a desendent of the reptile family and has evolved a very hard (light) shell in response to the demands of a life on the land. Reptiles retain a semihard shell that suits their environment as frogs use a gel to suit thier environment.

To all those that said the chicken egg evolved from reptiles many years ago, how do you know? Were you alive during that time period?
The truth is... the chicken eggs came first because they were reptile eggs, but they didn't evolve. They were subjected to radioactive waste and the reptile embroys changed/mutated into chicken looking creatures. I think this is why KFC now has 6-legged chickens. How else can they provide a full bucket of chicken legs?? Also as a side note, Adam and Eve are supposedly the first humans ever, so have you ever looked at pictures (artist renditions) of Adam and Eve? How come some show Adam and Eve, the first humans ever, to have belly buttons?? Go ahead, google it. Belly buttons are supposedly for the umbilical cord from MOTHER to CHILD... Interesting, isn't it? And who took those Adam and Eve pictures? Belly buttons or not, they are just artist renditions and have no scientific value! LOL
Although I don't think they (Adam and Eve)would have survived if they were just dropped from the bag of the stork or evolved from the closest looking primate, whatever, and landed on the planet as newborn babies. GlenD

For the joke impaired...

You actually did a search to see if that was asked before? Duuuuude....relax. Actually, finding a link and posting it, was meant as a joke. That's why I had the smiley face afterwards in my post. Which chicken or the egg Magic Café THREAD came first? Seemed like an obvious joke to me. I wasn't trying to point out a duplicate thread, for the purpose of getting it (them) locked down. - Donald
