What other clean and impossible location can you make a ring go other than ring flight?

Take a look at Paul Gertner's 'Steel and Silver' vidoes.
He vanishes a ring only to have it reappear on the middle of an hour glass! I'd be interested in any location that can top that. |

Ring to locked, double (nested) box was a popular in the late 70’s and 80’s. Ring to a simple locked Lipencott box still works wonders.
Then there is the old ring on stem of a wine glass or brandy snifter. This much like the ring on the hourglass thing and is the grandfather to that trick. Of course there is the very, very old ring found threaded on a ribbon inside a potato trick. Here a ribbon is threaded through a potato and when the potato is cut in half the borrowed and vanished ring is discovered threaded on the ribbon. Frankly I think that is much more amazing than the ring on hourglass. You could do the Malloy Ring to sealed envelope in the wallet routine (good routine by the way!) or the ring to a gift box, or even the ring to the ring box (the jewelers box). Then there is the no gimmick, no prop borrowed, vanished ring magically appearing on your ring finger (there are at least three published versions of this). I could go on and on but you get the drift.

Look at Tommy Wonder's nest of boxes routine. Great for a watch or perhaps a ring. He is a genius, and although I will never do his version, it amazes me at what the human brain can think of.....

I think it's Richard Osterlind, but I could be wrong, who has a little book of wonders with 3 tricks in it, one is a Ring to the belly of a balloon dog...
The hour glass is great, but oh what a lot of prep! Not really something you're going to use in a restaurant. Paul |

There's a magician in my area who does a wonderful ring routine. The ring is borrowed and vanished as cleanly as possible. The magician tells the spectator that if he can't make the ring re-appear, he will compensate them for the value. Several comedic tries to bring the ring back end in failure. The magician reaches in his pocket and pulls out a wad of cash. He asks how much the ring was worth. He then fumbles through the bills and gets a puzzled look on his face. He then reaches back into his pocket, retrieves a quarter and hands it to the spectator. This part is really funny. He tells them to buy a nice parting gift as a gumball machine is wheeled onto the stage. The spectator puts the quarter in the gumball machine and turns the crank, when the gumball tray lid is opened, there is the borrowed ring! This is his signature piece that he closes every act with. I think I might try something like this sometime.

Joe Given does/did a really great ring in a gumball machine routine, but that doesn't fit the tablehopper/party stroller forum.
I saw Fred Kaps perform a ring on wine glass stem in an old videotape. Is this effect written or available anywhere, even if not the Kaps version? I know that Bruce Kalver has a ring on brandy snifter. Petrick has a ring on rose, a ring IN rose, and a ring in a nest of bags. Although nice effects, like the above, I don't see them as extremely useful to a table hopper. Charlie Buckner has a very clean ring to purse effect, and I believe I remember seeing him also do a ring onto one of the stems of his eyeglasses that he was wearing. Those two effects were essentially , no reset. Even something as simple as a Lippincott Box has a modicum of prep, although it can easily be done under the guise of locking the box closed. I think Steve Duschek had a couple effects with ring boxes, and I once had a brass box with a screw-on lid that was used for a marked quarter reappearance, but could work for a ring. I don't recall who I saw perform this many years ago, but I remember seeing a ring loaded into an envelope in a zippered wallet, ala the same method as the card in envelope, etc. If it hasn't already been done, it would be easy enough to devise a ring into a closed card case. I'd imagine it would also be easy enough to load into an Okito Box that had been previously shown empty and left sitting closed on the table. Wasn't there also a ring in a salt cellar? I think there are endless possibilities here. ~michael

Hocus pocus has a really neat idea of ring on set mouse trap. Definately something I would use.

Jim Ryan's Ring, String and Wand routine is a visual killer, needs NO gimmicks and can be done more or less impromptu. See the Jim Ryan issue of the Magic Menu for details.
Walt Rollin's Ring-O (used to be available from Magic, Inc (and still may be) was great as well. Ring winds up in a box on the end of a pieceof ribbon, if I recall correctly. Ring in Salt Shaker routine from Mentzer's Close Up Cavalcade (I think volume 2) is a goodie, but requires some special somethings to do it. Just a couple of things... Lee Darrow, C.H.

That get's my vote for most visually effective "Ring to..." effect. I don't do it very often because the props I use are delicate, and the bar environment is not, but I do love that routine. Ring to salt shaker is pretty entertaining as well, and a little more durable. Best, Mike |

I just got the text and photos from Gaetan Bloom (and will be getting them put together and to the printer early next week) for a FANTASTIC, KILLER, FUNNY, MIRACULOUS routine using a paper bag and a Porper Strong Box.
This is Gaetan at his best... what a mind! Oh, you can use a ring or a marked coin with this routine.

Vanni Bossi from Italy has a powerful borrowed ring to light bulb. You can actually see the borrowed finger ring rolling around in the clear light bulb. Grab the bulb by its base and give the bulb a shake and the ring is seen to penetrate through the glass and fall onto the table. After the performance the ring and bulb may be handed out for examination. I believe that it is still available and when I bought mine it cost in the area of $20.00. I got mine from Vanni and that was back in the mid 1990s. The cost my have gone up.

I second Dushecks ringer and the effect can be repreted with no set up.also as mentioned by Michael Baker Dushecks quater in a ring box is a killer, the quater keeps appearing magically o the ring box right under the spectators nose.
I have both items and of ypou likem walk aroud effects these are the ones to get... Steve is a member here on the Café.......I understand Steve will be releasing his lecture that was filmed over 25 years ago with n many of his wonderand origional efffects ..... vinny |

I agree Vinny, "Confounding Coffer" is a killer effect. I also believe Steve will be lecturing (!) this fall in the NJ area. That was the last I heard anyway, and I hope that's still a go. I'm trying to coordinate a trip out there to visit with Howard B from the Trickery at the same time the lecture is/was slated to happen, but it's been a while since I've heard anything about it. Do you have any info on that?
Best, Mike |
