What is being used most nowadays? Seems like DVD....are VHS still as acceptable as they were a few years ago? I spoke with a photographer and he thinks within several years everything will be on a slide show on a DVD: pictures, video, press, etc. What do you think? Is it time for me to update?

Brian,
A friend of mine is producing DVD "business cards" for entertainers. I think it is the way to go. They are a mini DVD which can include everything. Video, text, graphics, links, etc etc. Because I don't do demos in bulk the vhs cost close to the same as the black dvd's (about $1 a piece) but the shipping on a dvd is much less. Plus, I can slip a dvd (in a thin case) into a folder containing my "press kit" and it is nice and slim and neat. Can't do that with a VHS. I picked up a external dvd burner for $250, I think it was well worth it. Edd

Hmm. I will say that vhs is not on the way out. it is out. everyone I know on my age here don't even have a vhs player but everyone can play dvds. if you don't have a dvd player the most people got a computer.
so. and vhs is expensive to ship and so on. seen some magic dealers that's just sell their vhs very cheap because no one wants them.. and that is my opinion |

Most Magic Dealers are dumping their VHS tapes because DVD are replacing them.
The DVD reader has the ability to jump instantly to the right location. It is much clear in sound and video colors. They store in a smaller area. I am converting all my VHS tapes to DVD because it is easier to store and use with my portable DVD player.

Brian -
If you are asking for the sake of promo materials (example - a promotional video), why don't you ask your customers what format they would prefer to receive it in? You might be surprised at the answers (I am guessing about 50/50, depending upon which market). Remember, its not about what we want or prefer. Its about what the customer wants and needs. - Donald

Donald hit the nail on the head! I made a DVD for a friend and made lots of copies. His agent wants VHS because many of the cruise ship rec. directors still request VHS tapes.

Walmart and Target recently announced that after Christmas 2005, they will no longer stock VHS format. This is the final nail in the coffin of VHS. Might as well put it on the shelf next to the 8 track tape player.
DVD is now THE format. I highly suggest that nobody go out and get huge runs of VHS promo tapes done lest you be considered living in the past by potential clients. Tis true that there are some agents and cruise lines still requesting VHS format. I would look for that trend to quickly end in the VERY near future. Lyndel |

Lyndel,
L&S has been selling their VHS stock to SAM groups for $5.00 per tape. With a VHS to DVD writer, it makes sense to get a $30 VHS tape and duplicate it on the DVD for personal use. The only drawback is the quality on the DVD is the same as on the VHS tape. It's a matter of preference and how many times are you going to review the tape.

Good point Dennis! That's not a bad idea for instructional stuff, but my rant was primarily geared toward promo videos that we send to clients.
The demand for VHS has dropped so dramatically, that I don't have large runs of VHS done at all any more. I still do keep a few on hand that I duplicate myself for the few clients that specifically requests VHS though. I anticipate that I won't be offering it in VHS within the next year or so however... In this age of instant publishing, it is easy to do small, cost-effective batches of your promo video on VHS or DVD. I agree with Lyndel, that large runs aren't necessary. However, I still stand my ground that you should ask your prospect which one they would prefer, if you can offer a choice.
- Donald P.S. My computer doesn't have a DVD player in it, and I only purchased my first DVD player for home use this past Christmas. I may or may not be a typical consumer. Guess I was late joining the game. I know some consumers who are still purchasing VCRs and also blank video tapes. Recordable DVD players are not quite low enough in price yet, to eliminate the usefulness of VCRs.

I got it! Send it to them in the old analog format:
Print out each frame of your video, staple together. Send it to them as a flip book! Seriously, Donald is right on. It doesn't matter if DVD, VHS or Beta are in or hot or whatever. If your potential client uses Beta, send 'em a Beta copy. As Donald said, it's about the customer. Not what's "hot." All the best! Scott |

VHS gets my sympathy points ...and I really wanna say I´m gonna miss "VHS-age"
But we all still know that good news are the quality, features and reliability of "newage" DVD:s!

Since I live in Alabama and CDs and DVDs are Alabama technology, guess what my vote would be?
Oddly, some TV stations still want VHS. Why? But of course, I still have my 45s from the 50s. I wish I had my Studebaker back! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I agree with Donald and with Scott on this one. It really comes down to you always catering to your prospect or client. Find out what they want and solve their needs by providing it to them.
With this in mind, I bought myself a quality DVD to VHS recorder. I now have the option to go either way deoending upon the client's needs at the time. I will ask them ahead of time which they prefer and then offer it to them. Even if you feel VHS is going out of style, it really is not up to you to decide that. If a client wants it in VHS, DVD or carrier pigeon, then we need to tailor it to their needs. Kyle
