How long will a goldfish survive in a kingsize TT for a barehanded production? I'm unwilling to perform the necessary and somewhat sinister experiments to find out myself, but would be interested to know the results of anyone else's macabre discoveries...

I believe http://www.KJMagic.com has a production relying on a similar principle that lasts for about 15 minutes, however the method you are suggesting would almost certainly be unsafe and with a very short survival time.

I agree. I would expect a fish to not last very long like you describe.
If it harms the animal, it should not be done.

A little tip: when producing the goldfish pour it into a brandy glass, it will make the small fish look bigger and also give the water in the glass a few swirls so that if the fish does die it will look like it is still alive in the water.
In a TT with water I would say not very long, 10 minutes max probably. I rarely do it but if I were I would bring a tank of small fish to my show put it in my room where I was setting up, produce the fish, go back place it in the tank get another and load it up. All the best, Matt |

Isn't that cruelty to animals?
I would not tolerate watching that done by another magician. |

Erm, a carrot would last a very long time in a TT, cut right it'll resemble a goldfish, a switch (how big is a brandy glass...) and you've got a live one.

Elliot: in what sense is keeping a goldfish temporarily in a TT any "crueller" than keeping a dove temporarily in a dove harness? Or, for that matter, a sodding great white tiger in a box painted black?
BTW, and this is I admit a little off topic, do you eat fish? Because if you do, you're presumably content to tolerate the cruelty that that involves. So, I ask a simple question with the aim of minimising any distress to my fish and half the replies are sanctimonious sermons! Tchoh! Paul Jester: thanks for your thoughts. In a table-hopping situation though (I didn't specify) it would look like I'd produced a piece of carrot, I fear, and thus have less impact. |

I say take advantage of what kind of table you work out of as well. For example, I have produced a goldfish out of thumbtip using both a Lefler Suitcase table or a stand-up case. In both of those, I have the goblet of water I will use to place the fish into after production right next to a piece of foam holding the thumbtip with water upright. The fish is in the goblet.
As I go to get the goblet out of the table or case, I scoop the fish out of the gobelt and drop it in the thumbtip. That way, depending on where I do the bit in the show, the fish is not in the tip for any more than 30 seconds to a minute. |

Hey - swift move! I like that but I'm not sure I'd be able to be that accurate with the scoop-and-dump manoeuver and would end up dumping the fish in someone's spaghetti ("Hey, I didn't order sushi!")

There is an OLD magic principle that involves borrowing a dollar bill, and from it pouring a fish into a brandy glass. I've seen this routine performed with flash cotton, also. (borrow dollar bill, roll it into a cylinder, stuff the bottom with a "cottom ball," light the cotton ball, pour fish from bill). Rather than use a thumb tip, this method uses a hollowed out wax candle. I'll also say that what makes the effect impressive is that when you pour the fish into the brandy or wine glass, hold the bill a good 12 to 18 inches above the glass so the audience can see the fish being produced and falling into the glass. It makes all the difference!

Hi All
I will be using the Arthur Tivoli ‘Balloonofish’ version. I will give a review of this product at a later date – not a good one. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody out there could give me some advice on the best and most humane way to load the fish (has anybody any real idea how long it can be safely kept in this condition before production?) I was thinking of buying a funnel, which could be modified so the fish could be kept in it until it comes time for production. You would then unseal the funnel bottom and allow the fish to slip into the TT. Is it better that the fish is head up or head down? Really need some advise. Alex

I perform this every kids show. I do the load right before I come out. I use a lunch bag shown empty. I stick my empty hand inside the bag and produce the fish.
I'm a little afraid of wrapping the dollar around the TT because of some child yelling out he knows it.

Aha! I have a great idea! put a small rubber fish in your tt, and when you take it out just manuvure you fingers to make it look like it is jiggling around, then put it in a tank of water and put the tank away quickly before it sinks to the bottom. I would DEFINITELY NOT do this to a real fish, just too risky. there are other ways of producing a fist that that. Look in "Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic" There is a wine glass production in it and the wine glass can be filled with fluid. It would work with a fish in it too. Just hope that it doesn't die from being moved around so much.

Yoh! All
Let me try to clarify – I am producing a live goldfish. I would like to know – the easiest and most humane way of loading it into a TT? Has anybody (who actually performs this trick) had the fish die on them? And do thy have any ‘real’ idea how long the fish can be kept in the TT without snuffing it? Has anybody performed the Arthur Tivoli Version? How’s it working for you? All the best Alex

I also had a problem loading the fish in a TT as I found it to bee to small for most fishes. How to solve it? I stopped using a TT and started to use an empty plastic film box. You know the small black plastic container that new film comes in when you buy it (If you do not use a digital camera). It leaves mush more space for the fish, holds the water better, doesn't tip over as easy as a TT and it has a lid (just remember to put some air holes in it).
