I just watched some footage of him performing. All I can say is "Wow!" I have a new standard to hold myself up to. The guy's was amazing. Everything was so perfect.

Fred Kaps was possibly the greatest all around magician there ever was.Unfortunately he passed away much too young. I do not think there will ever be another like him, but sure would love to see someone come close as watching him was mesmerizing..

There is a 16mm movie of Fred Kaps that was put on video. It is about a beginning magician who is reading a magic book and is practicing what he is reading. I don’t know who the actors was that played the magician but it was Fred Kaps hands that were used for all of the performance shots. So all you see in the movie are Fred Kaps hands. This movie shows some great stuff and is worth almost any cost, if you can find it.

Actually, there were 2 films...one dedicated to coins...the other cards. And both are simply fantastic!

Max Mindlin, who died young sadly, was the producer and guy in the film with Kaps.

Yes Pete, accordingly to Eddy Taytelbaum, Max Mindlin, who was a heavy smooker (and drinker) died due to a fire in his appartment caused by he felt asleep smoking in his bed.
The originals of that 16 mm movie is supposed to be lost in that fire... Most copies around are copies of copies and the picture quality is bad, as are mine, Eddy promised to have a look out for better copies, but he's so occupied with other personal stuff ... I recall, having meet Max at some dutch conventions a couple of times way back in the 1960s, he was the one so happy able to do the Paul le Paul spreadpass so well , he had some dealerboot at conventions, can't recall though if he worked for himself or did demos at Henk Vermeydens boot..

I did some checking and found the information on the Kaps video.
It was Hans Zahn of Videonics in Canada that showed me the video at the Magi-fest back in, I believe, 1984. From what I recall the quality of the video was quite good and it "the video" contained both the cards and coins on one video. As Mike said "both are simply fantastic!" Do you have any connection with him Anthony? I just was a customer at his place way back...

Well hello everybody, This is Hans M Zahn, and I would hate to disappoint anyone by saying I am still alive. I must have broken one mirror and cracked another back in 1989 because when I sold the rights to my "released" material from Videonics back in 1998 I was nearing the end of a long run of "incidents", namely a nasty divorce, major surgery, a big break-in, a car accident, a run in with the Tax Man or Woman, just to name a few. Yes, I do have both the films with Max Mindlin on film and Fred Kaps's hands. These were converted to video and I just found it and have digitized it. Now let me just say this, I have NEVER sold any video prints of these films. I will relate the story to you (if you still get updates to this post as it started in 2005) of how I got the footage. I have known Peter Reveen since the early 70's and every time he did a tour in eastern Canada he would play North Sydney in Nova Scotia. He liked going there because the late Karl Therkauf (spelling may be off) lived there and Peter liked talking to him about the great days of Vaudeville and the great depression. Karl and his childhood friend used to play Carnivals doing magic. At some point Karl's friend moved to Victoria BC and did quite well for himself. Karl, on the other hand did not leave Nova Scotia because of his wife and hadn't seen his friend in quite some time. Well, in 1980 or so ( I would have to check my records, don't have time right now) Karl wasn't well at all, he could hardly sit up. Peter was here and was going to be in North Sydney the following week. Between the two of us we decided to have a mini magic convention right in Karl's living room. I called Bruce Armstrong of "Merry Go Max" fame to drive up from Halifax and join Peter and myself. I brought along my portable video gear and sometime during the day recorded Peter Reveen doing an interview with Karl, talking about the old days. We did this for Karl and his lifelong friend in BC who didn't want to join us and see his dear friend in the state he was in. I know I have the interview around here somewhere and once I find it I would be able to give you the name of this person from out west. I'm getting older myself and unless I have a "nickname" attached to someone I tend to forget the real name. The bottom line is Karl had a wonderful time. I showed himk some of the latest magic from Europe and Bruce performed some items as well. When I got back home the next day, I made copies of the 'interview" for everyone. Karl's friend was so delighted, being able to see his friend on video that he sent me the "films".
Now you all know how they came into my possession. I'm sorry that I did not get the email back in 2005. When my Father died in late 2002 most of my time was taken up with looking after my Mother. I used to have to bring her to Germany at least twice a year which meant packing her bags, setting her up in the apartment and going back over to do the same in reverse. I would stay with her for a bit when I brought her over, usually 2 or three weeks, because if I were to stay any longer then most certainly I would wind up in rehab. The wine in my home town is world famous and reasonably priced! I'm not that hard to find. I'm still in the phone book and on Facebook now. |

Fred Kaps can be found on the "Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show" collection.
Each of the Beatles four appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show are shown along with the entire episode. Fred Kaps does his card trick with the four black cards and the one red King which keeps coming back. The audience is muted for that one, I think they may have actually thought he was making a mistake the first couple of times. By the time they start responding, he's almost done. He also does his 1 1/2 minute salt pour. Now I used to read about this in the catalogs; "You can do Fred Kaps 1 1/2 minute salt pour." I didn't know who "Fred Kaps" was at the time and I couldn't help but to think; "What are you supposed to do while you're pouring salt for 1 and a half minutes?" Then I saw this clip and now I know what you're supposed to do! (I won't do it though, even if no one else remembers it, I know it's Fred's trick and I don't think I'll ever bring anything special to it.) The only other magician on the set is Fantasio who, oddly enough, doesn't do anything with either candles or canes. He does a standard magician's set. But he does it very well.

Is the films mentioned in this post available in any present day media?
I have the DVD "Seeing is Believing", but would like anything additional that shows Fred Kaps. |

I believe Tommy Wonder believed himself to be a footnote to Fred Kaps. I think he (Tommy) was a delightful continuation of many cabaret/parlor magicians, Cardini most of all.
