Now don't get me wrong, as a feat of card magic the ACR takes a lot of beating, but my real problem with it (and yes it is MY problem) has always been to try to develop a suitable presentation for it. I've seen far too many magicians go down the route of "Look I put the card in the middle and it rises to the top" type of patter, and it leaves me cold. For myself this makes it no more than a 'look what a clever magician I am type of trick, rather than a pure piece of amazement and entertainment, which it rightly deserves to be. So come on guys, give me an idea or two for presentation that might help me with my mental blank when it comes to this gem. All contributions gratefully accepted.

You could go with the old classic Svengali patter of the "elevator button" and everytime the spectator pushes the "button" (really just any spot on the back of the card) it comes to the top. I used to take a knife and scratch some of the pips saying "Look, by removing some of this card, I have made it lighter than all the other cards" Scratching the card can also take the place of signing the card, and it's much less noticable if you leave the card it. A fellow magician once was showing me a card trick and I picked a previously signed card, and I got the feeling that it was "somebody else's card" which is why I don't like to leave signed cards in the deck. I'm sure there's many other ideas as well.

I've dribbled with a 'bumbling' magician format where I can't seem to 'lose' the card in order to begin a trick...it just keeps coming back to where I don't want it to be. With the right charater play it's a lot of fun.
Playing the "I don't know why or how this is happening" magician can be fun and very disarming as long as you play it well. It can also relieve you from having to answer those "can you do it again?" or "how did you do that?" questions. |

My routine, as with others, it gets more impossible as you go.
first to the top then it is signed then it's up in face up then it's put in face up again but it comes to the top by itself, with one hand tied behind my back. One of the keys is to use lines that generate comments from your spectators. Then learn to be able to conversate during the routine with them. Nothing worse, in my opinion, than a forced presentation, say, about star-trek and the signed card is really a "tribble" that keeps appearing on Captian Kirk's chair on the bridge and every time he puts it back under the seat, another one appears, etc.. *puke* Just do the trick.

I generally agree with Frank about contrived patter lines. I'm not saying that there aren't clever presentations, but make sure it fits your character and doesn't bore the audience. I love what Whit Haydn has to say about this subject. He comments that a trick doesn't have to be about anything meaningful in life. The TRICK is enough to entertain if the performer is competent.
If, however, you are looking for a special presentation, John Guastaferro (spelling?) has a clever presentation on his wonderful Brainstorming DVD's called Detour. It's a simple, yet entertaining Ambitious Card routine culminating in a Card to Wallet. The misdirection for the loading of the card is very strong if you are at all afraid of palming. The DVD set is well worth your time. Caleb
