Actually, I know Nick. He's part of the local Tampa, FL ring 175. He's actually really good as close-up sleights and I've witnessed his sponge routine, unfortunately on the show, though, they weren't very interested in seeing his magic that much, so they cut it short. Anyway, my point is, you can't judge a person from a short, edited clip of his magic. I mean, at least we wasn't like the big guy who said he looks like Ben Affleck and thought that there was no way we was going to lose. Last year at my university, there were 2 local magicians that performed a show on different nights. Nick had a decent show (the laypeople loved it, but it didn't fool me, though it was still entertaining) and the other guy... well... not so much.

I had a think about this last night and I want to temper my statements.
First off I've not seen the show. Secondly, we all know before you wind up on a show like this there are multiple interviews and questionaires to be filled out. I'm sure the producers ask the folks to list thier hobbies and special intrests. Who among us wouldn't list magic on a questionaire asking about our intrests and hobbies? So of course they knew he liked magic. Also, I've often wondered what I would do all day if I was in one of these situations where I had to live in a house with a bunch of people and what would I bring into the house. Of course I would bring cards, coins magic books and the like. These people have a lot of downtime, I would spend that time messing around with magic I suppose. They are being filmed a large portion of the time so most everything they do is captured on tape and then condensed for TV. And that's the biggest thing. This is TV. What you see on the screen is not necessarily "reality" despite the genre of reality TV. Seriously Reis, if you were stuck in one of these houses for a few weeks with a bunch of people and had some magic props...How long do you think it would be before you did a trick for someone? It would happen eventually, possibly even sooner rather than later. I'll not knock the guy no more. Vandy

You have a point, Vandy. I'm mostly just razzing the guy out of sheer annoyance. I'm sure he's just ducky as a close-up magician. I'm just sick of people in our craft saying things like, "Chicks LOVE magic!" and then wiggle their eyebrows like a creepy little pervert. Ugh! Even worse when it's done on national tv.
Actually, if I was stuck in that house with a bunch of other desparate-for-love chowder-heads I'd like to think I'd use my magic skills to fleece them for every dime they have. SUCKERS!!!!! |

I really haven't changed my tune that much from my original post, I don't like the show with or without magic or magicians. I just didn't want to come down too hard on the guy personally. At least on a public forum. Heck the kid could be reading this for all I know. God Bless ya Kid, go get em'!! Vandy Reis, I PM you with the really cruel comments from now on....LOL

The kid has a big heart and sincerely wants to be the next Copperfield but he lacks the business side of the magic and that will only hurt him. I know him and have worked a show with him before. Me personally I didn't care for the show. After he was voted off I stopped watching. Nick if you see this, Im sure you will, RESPOND TO THESE PEOPLE. You people really should not belittle another fellow performer. IF there is one thing I have learned in magic is to respect fellow performers. He may not be the greatest magiaican around but he's trying, and he's not giving up. I'd be scared to see the magician who thinks is really good and doesn't bother trying to be better and actually sucks. Encourage him and others who aren't the greatest.
Just my 2 cents. |

I notice website doesn't say WHAT tv show he is on. Just that he is on tv.
Whenever TV or Movies want to trot out a geek that stick a deck of cards and a jumbo coin in their hands and voila...Instant Geek! Arrested Development, League of Gentlemen, 40 year old virgin (who has a photo of Henning on his door) Its such a common idea that it makes you think that maybe the the general public's perception of magic IS that it is uncool, geeky and nerdy! |
