In July 2005 issue of Magic, Max Maven wrote an article answering the question "What is the one piece of advice you would give to magicians?" If you haven't read it, track it down and let's discuss it.

You got your July issue already?? I usually don't get mine until the 6th or 7th of the month.

I got my July issue, and read Maven's column with great interest. Rereading it upon seeing your question, I found myself thinking that I only achieved "walking" status about three years ago.
Sure, I had read the "Self-Working" magic books. I had bought a bunch of "E-Z" tricks. But I wasn't a magician. I was -- well, dabbling in magic. Infantile. Once I spent some time in serious practice mastering the Double Lift (Thanks, Greg Wilson!) and other "basics," spent time studying books by Paul Harris, Gary Ouellet, Duane Laflin and Michael Ammar, and spent time with other magicians in the IBM and FCM, that's when I really started to become a magician. I agree that "Easy To Master" is an oxymoron. It takes a long time to master the Double Lift, for example, which is a tool in use almost from the second effect in that long-running series. Elmsley Counts? Palming? They're all more sophisticated motor/misdirction skills than we think at first. Well, that's my take on Maven's column. It was good. Carrie |
