It really depends on what you mean by
"beginner" I remember the first time I went to the magic store, I was talking to Jeff (the owner) and told him I was a beginner, well, what I thought of as a beginner and what he thought of as a beginner were 2 different things. I ended up getting stuff I already knew. So if you could put a little more detail, I'm sure you'd get some great advice |

It is also important to figure out where you want to start. There are so many videos out there for so many types of magic (card, coins, mental etc.)
Once you have narrowed it down I would suggest you search this catagory or re-post. |

If you are a total beginner you can always buy Larry Andersons jaw droppers videos that you see advertised on T.V. all the time.

A video/DVD I would recommend to absolute beginners is The Exciting World of Magic by Michael Ammar.
He peforms and explains tricks involving coins, cards, string, all sorts of stuff. He also gives advice regarding magic magazines, magic clubs, buying tricks, and other things that a beginner would have questions on. I especially like how as he's talking, a box will appear on the screen giving extra info. He also has a very friendly, easygoing manner that puts you at ease. |

Beginner? Start with books. No matter how you feel that videos are better - they are not. Every magician shoud have the Tarbell series, Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, The Royal Road To Card Magic, The Jinx, ...
The best source for many many books is a major bookstore - many of the classics have been reprinted by Dover Publications. Check out their web site. A life time's supply of magic for one fifth to one tenth of the price.
You have to give it away to keep it.

Though I agree that books are the better value, I think Bobo's or Royal Road could be a bit intimidating to the novice. It is very helpful to be shown how an effect should look and videos are the best source (aside from 1 on 1 instruction) available.
For the absolute beginner, I recommend the 25 Tricks videos. There is a lot of good information on these tapes and they are very reasonably priced. Thanks, Richard Green

For me, yeah I prefer to view or buy videos but then I moved to reading books first.

James,
Consider purchasing and studying Mark Wilson's 4 tape Course on Magic. This is an excellent course covering just about every aspect of magic for the beginner. |

If you want to go with cards, you have to go with Royal Road to Card Magic. It is a great book.

Royal Road to Card Magic is great advice. But also listen to Uri. You can find what you're looking for in this very forum
