I am going to hit this oldschool.
I need a VCR/VHS player. I recently purchased the McBride art of card manipulations series thinking it would be extremely simple to purchase a vcr. I WAS WRONG ofcourse, BUMMER. I threw away my old vcr a while ago and now in days everyone is SO picky. I go to amazon and read all negative reviews on all vcr's for some reason. It makes me think that ANY vcr I purchase is going to be a tragedy in the making. Anywhom my question for all you owners of vrc's is what is the brand and model of your vcr. Has it served you well for a while? Have a great day guys. Any help as always is greatly appreciated. |

I wouldn't waste much time looking for a quality VCR. They are built (and priced) to basically be disposible. Go to Wal-Mart and buy a 4 head Emerson for 30 bucks or so. When It dies chuck it and get another. I keep a VCR around for some older video that I have, they last a few years depending how much you use them.

When my DVD or VCR dies, I am planning to get a DVD/VCR combo, preferably with a DVD-R in it. Anyone know if you can "backup" tapes onto dvds with those?

Personally, I wouldn't buy a cheap brand of VCR (like at a place like Wal-Mart or Superstore). In my opinion (and it's just that, an opinion), Emerson is not a brand name of electronics I would buy.
I would go to a place like Costco and buy a decent 4-head VCR. They will be a good brand-name, backed by a decent warranty (usually 1 year at Costco), and fairly good quality. They are only about $80 Canadian for a 4-head (better than a 2-head) VCR by JVC, Sony, and others. If you buy it at some other places, like Radio Shack, The Source by Circuit City, etc. you might have the option of extending the warranty to 3 years for a modest fee. Just be sure to get a REPLACEMENT warranty (where they just hand you a new item) as opposed to a REPAIR warranty (where they send it away for repair). - Donald P.S. Most DVD / VCR combos, do not allow you to record on the DVD. You would need to use a DVD Recorder to do that. Be sure that the outputs on the VCR match the inputs on the DVD player (there are some different ways to transfer the signal). Some DVD players will say DVD-R or DVD-RW on them, but they only play those formats of DVDs, they don't burn them. Know before you buy.

Like Donald, I've been concerned about losing my library of a hundred-plus magic and other performance art instructional VHS tapes to age degradation. I also have countless personal show and family VHS tapes. I went to BJ's Warehouse (No pun comments please) and bought a Motorola VCR/DVD-R/DVD-RW combo for about $200.00. I'm in the process of copying all of my VHS tapes onto DVDs for personal archival purposes. This unit has certainly made the process easier and nearly fool-proof.
I'm a strong believer in protecting copyrights...so, I'll still keep and protect the original VHS tapes as potential collectibles down the road. I'll use the DVDs for my periodic reviews and show development. Skip

Wow, only 200 bucks. Gotta get me one. Last time I saw the price for these things it was well over 500!

200 bucks is certainly a good deal if you think of what you stand to lose when the VHS tapes go kaput. I'm in the same boat myself. My concern is for the family tapes. The magic is replaceable, if valuable, at all.

If you are in Canada, The Source by Circuit City (stores in Canada formerly known as Radio Shack) has a Pioneer Brand VCR and DVD Recorder unit on for $399.99 right now. I saw this in their flyer, stock number 161-1307 (if you visit the store in person).
Here is a link. There is also an RCA brand one for a little more (I think on special for $429). - Donald

Which would you rather record on, DVD+R or DVD-R? (Don't just say, whichever format your machine can play. )
Some of the links are to one type, some are to the other. - Donald

GO CHEAP, YOUNG MAN!
I repair electronics for a living. Even the upper mid-priced VCRs are disposable these days. They don't make 'em like they use to. Ignore brand names... they are all made in the same three factories anyway. Do NOT spend over $50 for a VCR! A $30 Emerson will do the job...why pay more for something you are not going to use much anyway. |
