Ok, well, I had trouble following the card bit, but it looked good, and you got good responces from the crowd. It seems a little rehearsed, maybe it is only my style, but I like it when the magic, and what the magician does is in responce to the crowd. All that you being rehearsed means is that you have practiced a lot, so that is good. But, try to pay attention to the audience. You tend to look at what you are doing a lot, like looking at the cards, at your pocket, at the cups/balls... look at the audience a little more. I think there should be a little more audience interaction. I couldn't here what you were saying most of the time, but that isn't your fault. But the jokes were getting good reactions, so that is good.
The cups and balls: your right hand had some unatural positions a couple or times. Just hold onto the WAND!!! that's what it is there for! Nice bit with the finger thing, I liked that. My personal preference, when one enters the 2-0-2 sequence, leave the cups' mouth in view, it is less suspicious. In your routine onece you have done the tip over-laoding sequence, and show that they have re-appeared, you turn the cups mouth down, that is not necessary (and just more movement), just move-on to scooping the balls into the cups. (This is just my opinion, I think it is more natural). The loading sequence: I don't like the sudden sitting down, not good. Either perform it sitting down, or up, don't switch during the routine. I really liked it, obviously you have spent some time with this, keep at it!

I thought you did a great job! It took a lot of courage to even enter into the CAM close up competition and your advance preparation clearly came through in your act. Your body posture, eye contact, and voice projection were very effective. I really enjoyed the audience reaction and involvement throughout much of your routine.
I am not going to give you a detailed technical critique. From everything I have seen in your video, you are mature enough to embark upon a thorough self-analysis without additional arm-chair critics throwing missles your way. I am curious, though, how you did in the competition. Did the judges provide you with any detailed comments or feedback? What criteria were used in scoring and how was it weighted? Once again, very well done. Kent

I was there at CAM and thought that Ben was fantastic. He was very relaxed, entertaining and performed some very good magic.

Thanks guys,
I won the Junior Close Up division with my act, and my teacher, Patrick Drake, won the Senior Close-Up and the People's Choice award! Thanks for all the comments, advice and compliments. Just out of interest, you will notitice that the three gentlemen in the fron row (judges) are (from left to right) Obie O'Brien, Murray Hatfield, and Shoot Ogawa. Pretty intimidating front row if you ask me! I didn't get back a mark sheet although I talked to Obie and Shoot about it afterwards. Ben |

Considering that, WOW, you did fabulously! Your presentation and performing looked great, the audience was into what you were doing.

Just wondering, were the routines original? |

The bottle production at the very beginning was by Jim Pace, a lot of the Card to Pocket moves were form the poriginal write up in Stars of Magic, and the Cups and balls routine was the vernon routine leaving out a couple phases and chaging the nding blocking a bit. But, the first bottle & smarties routine is mine, as well as the blank cards, as well as the smarties finale.
