Here are some thoughts on magic and the education of magic that I have had for quite some time. I know that there are some members of the café that might not agree. And some members don’t need to hear this. But som young members and members that are just starting out might find something useful in the words below!
What does that have to do with buying magic? I feel that becoming a magician and getting a true magic education - it isn’t about buying magic. It is about learning magic. I grew up in a magic shop and we did our best sell but also educate magicians that were interested in learning magic as appose to getting that new toy that comes out every month. How do you get a magic education and become a magician? I was asked this many times in the old days of the magic shop. It is partly in what you buy, books video’s DVD’s etc. But a lot to do with having a complete education in magic is doing shows and to start thinking like a magician. To me being a magician is as much of a lifestyle choice as well as a profession. I was asked - what are you saying - a lifestyle choice? Well if you asked that question to many different magicians you would get many different answers because all magicians choose to live their lives different ways and go after different markets. But the basic answer is in the way that you think about magic. The magician that does magic as a lifestyle loves magic. They are students of magic and they continue their education, experimenting, inventing, writing, practicing, producing and performing - just because they love what they do! It is sort of like an artist that has something inside them and they HAVE to paint to get it out. What they paint is a way that they try to express what is inside them. Bruce Lee once said that his marshal arts was a way to honestly express himself. I feel that way about magic and magic as an art for it is a way for a magician to honestly express himself or herself through magic that is experienced by an audience, and the result is entertainment. This is why I feel that magic is as much of a lifestyle I think the reason why is that for me magic is not about buying magic and it is about learning magic and education of magic and the performance of magic. Because it is through the performance of magic is the way that we complete the education of magic. And I would say that this rule of the performance of magic is the final step in the full education of magic - for a single routine - or a full show! So the road to a full education of magic - of a single effect would be… Learn from a - book - DVD - Video - Lecture - Session etc. Practice - Effect. Perform the effect in front of people at several shows to polish the effect and hone it to perfection. These three steps in the learning and the full education of each effect! This is not the only way but just some thoughts on the education of magic.

This is the best post of the year so far for me.
Hideo Kato P.S. I would like to add that we can learn from the marketted tricks we bought. The problem is not in marketted tricks. The problem is in 'buying but not learning deeply, or buying to collect'. This problem can occur in buying books, DVDs, attending lectures, Sessions etc. |

Thanks but I should have spelled martial arts like this and there are a few more spelling problems. Magic is very zen like for me and I feel blessed that I can make a living doing something I love so much!

Great post! I would only add that in learning one of the most powerful things you can do is *reflect*.
I guess this is implicit in polishing and honing the trick to perfection, but I think it should be made explicit. The best way to polish and hone is to reflect on what happened: what went well, what didn't, where's the weakest point, did I do my best, etc. (Note that these are all questions...) DW |
