You know, the sad thing is we've got a lot of people here saying; "How can I learn to do that?"
Why? That's his effect, he created it and it seems to me it would only work in that limited setting. That's similar to the magic article I read about the guy who showed the magic faternity his toilet paper roll puppet idea and heard from almost everyone; "Ooooh, that's great. I can't wait to put that into my show!"

How right you are, Mandrake01. It amazes me that some of these people can't sit back and think, "That's a good idea. I wish I had thought it, but I didn't. Maybe I should sit down and create some of my own stuff."
The usual fascination with this stuff is that it's new, but can't they realize that it took the creator or creators a lot of thinking and experimenting to come up with these things? Don't they realize that they are cheating themselves by not taking the time to try and be creative on their own instead of acting like a pack of wolves waiting to attack the next thing that comes by? I don't get it, but I guess I never will. I feel lucky to know many of the guys and gals that actually try to be unique. I keep telling Cyril that I'm so glad his shows don't run over here because there would be so many guys trying to rip off many of his great ideas. Even his show has an interesting spin that makes it different from other shows and that would be copied too if it were seen here. It's all a shame, really. Greg

To Greg and Mandrake,
Well.. as a great and wise magician once told me, it is better to first learn existing routines perfectly on the type of magic you want to do and then only after understanding the format of the magic, you can make up your own. For example, you can't write a song on the guitar if you don't know any chords or how songs are written. You have to learn the idea, practice it, and then after a while you can create your own. It is the same thing in magic. I want to know how to do this trick so that I can learn the ideas and then create my own trick. It is a good idea to learn from the wise.

Munch1215, that's a true statement if done that way, but what we see are not people picking up the books and learning the basics... instead they buy one invisible deck and thumbtip and then want to know how and where to buy the magic that they just saw on TV. I really wish I would see more guys learning the basics and trying to understand what it's all about before deciding they have a right to know all the secrets just because they now know how to do a double lift.
You mention the writing of song: what if a perons just learning the scales immediatetly thought when watching some famous songwriter's new song that if he could just buy that song then that would make him good? What if somehow the amateur songwriter could somehow be secretly watching a working songwriter as they write some new tunes and be able to steal it from them? But that basically happens in magic. They watch TV shows to learn what to do. Don't they ever get the point that if they just saw something new then it's possible that there's other things out there, in books, that they can discover on their own? So yes, learn the chords and how songs are written before you break into some famous songwriter's house and steal his works. Write your own songs, even bad ones, and that will teach you how it's done... not simply mimmicking and stealing everything you see. I also write. Can you imagine having new writers be able to lurk into the computers of other writers and steal their scripts? They learn about writing scripts by taking course, reading books, picking up old scripts to see the structure and writing all the time... but writing their own stuff so they develop their own voice... not merely taking the latest Stephen King novel and retyping it themselves. Greg

Similarly a generation of coinmen lost my respect by waving around a fan of coins, and recently I lost respect for the IBM ethics committee for sloughing the issue. Some of us who invent are not pleased to see magicians acting like a flock of pigeons who expect to nibble on everything they see. Sometimes you have to choose between being a man or a lower life form. For better or worse, most have chosen. Please don't ask for respect as a man if you act like a pigeon. Likewise it is unseemly to use human language to justify acting like a pigeon.

The playboy centrefold is actually quite easy. The only hard art is getting the staples out of her belly button.
