You are in a car traveling at a constant speed above zero. On your left is a void. On your right is a firetruck which isn't moving even an inch backwards or forwards relative to your car. In front of you is a pig, bigger than your car, running. A helicopter follows right behind you at ground height. Both pig and helicopter have the same speed.
How do you stop? /Tomas |

Pushing the break pedal! That's how you stop a car.

A pig bigger than a car? Is that normal in Sweden?
Anyhow, I'm presuming that Roland's answer is not the one you were wanting. And I am presuming you wish me to stop safely. Can I not just swerve off into the void? DW |

Something about "a void" and "avoid" which might be useful if this were the matrix.

Ground height is pretty low...

Smashing into any of the other things around you should get you to a stop pretty quickly. I recommend the helicopter.

If the helicopter is at ground level, it isn't likely to be moving. Therefore the pig is still, as is everything else, and you aren't moving either.
However, you state that you are traveling at a constant speed above zero. Is this because the Earth is rotating in space?

Please Stephen if Tomas has a way to stop the world we could all be in trouble. Come to think of it he says he has a way to make voids... be scared, very scared.

I like the idea. Imagine the car is standing. Yet, due to the fact that the earth moves through space it would still have a speed that is approx. 30 kilometers per second (!) So we would be travelling with a constant speed above zero. In the front there still could be the big pig running. (It would be running away from the car) Firetruck and helicopter would be standing. So in order to stop the car relative to the ground you would have to do nothing.
But what if the car is facing the the wrong direction. Against the earths movement. Then stopping the car would mean that you have to speed up the car to 30 kilometers per second.... oh sorry, that is not leading to anything. |

This scenario must take place behind the looking glass.

A constant speed above zero, if it's above zero it must be cold there.

Speed is not the same as velocity.
