Here's a description from the intro to the book "Change Raisers"
Quote:
Who and what are the "change raisers?" They are the grifters who trick cashiers and clerks into returning too much change.

A full description of the book can be found here

I have played fast and loose on the street once in my life for real money.

I was doing my standard demo at an outdoor Café for some punters where I give them MY money to play (and lose) with. A guy came over and started watching, not knowing the context. Suddenly, he slammed ten dollars down on the table and stuck his finger in a loop!

I told him that we were just playing for fun and he wasn't supposed to bet. He sneered and said "why? 'cos I won?"

So I pulled the chain took his cash and paid for my audience's coffees!

I used a similar idea as Police Magician when someone insisted on playing for money during a presentation. I had him keep track of the total on paper and IF (smiling at the audience) he lost, he would donate that money to the charity of his choice. Thereby entertaining my audience, teaching him a lesson and helping someone else out without raising eyebrows of the local law.
I have also played the games at fundraisers with all the procededs going to the charity. Everyone who was attending knew the money lost was going to the charity as it was going in a jug next to my table and were they had brought cash with the intent of giving it to the charity. They were entertained and taken but for a good cause. It was money they would have donated at the end of the evening anyway. It felt real to them and to me I must say, real cash changing hands had a thrill not gained in other performances. I still wouldn't want to do it on the street, just not my style.

Keith, that is a great idea. I have a couple of charities I do shows for when they do a fund raiser. Now, I have something else to perform and help them increase their revenue. Thanks for the fantastic idea. Glenn

I have some friends who ripped off 15 million dollars and 1 of them got 2 years and his dad got 5 years but he went to trial. Another guy can rob a liquor store for $100 and get 20 years. I guess its the same thing with the monte and shell game worker. The poor monte and shell game worker is hated worldwide but the casinos rip people off for billions and nobody calls them crooks. lol.

I guess its true what the bible says "to him who has it shall be added and to him who has not even the little he has shall be taken away. In my opinion the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. I wonder another reason that people hate street monte/shell game players is because they r minorites???

I believe the guy who got 20 years may have used a firearm. Most people convicted of scams receive, if any time at all, just a short sentence.

I posted this in the "I feel like I've just been had" section and, got a very complimentary comment from one of the big names on the board. Seeing as how I have used this particular script on the street and NEVER caught any flack, even from some pretty unfriendly law enforcement types, here it is, for your perusal:

"Step up, step up, step up, my friends for a demonstration in the not-so-fine art of skinning the rubes, conning the marks or, as the hoi-polloi say, taking someone to the cleaners by means of a swindle that looks like an innocent game of chance!

"In this game we will not, I repeat myself for those of you who like myself are hard of seeing, we will NOT be taking bets, accepting wagers or putting money on where the little pea is going to be as gambling is illegal unless you happen to have a casino riverboat and river in your hip pocket or you are the State Lottery.

"I am neither, so on with the demonstration for your entertainment, edification and to amaze and delight your eyes and possibly save you some serious loot and from being seriously looted in the future by someone with fewer scruples than I have!"
---------------------------

I them bring out ONE shell (my chop cup, as I do not do the shell game) and go into my routine AS IF it WAS the shell game. However, this little bit of schtick would undoubtedly work for someone that would like to do a shell game routine and get people "in the mood to be entertained by a scam."

I know that it's worked for me for about 39 years or so in one form or another - please vary it to fit your own personal style. That's all I ask... and a little bit of credit for the script if anyone should ask, of course...
