When you do you card tricks, do you actually mention the names of the trick? Like when you do the Twisting the Aces or NFW, do you say something like, "Look, this one is called NFW, guess why?" Me, personally, I NEVER say the name of the trick, or I change it, because I'm afraid someone who's in my classroom who's good on internet researching does a search and finds it on the internet or at least will know how and where to get.
What do you think?

I don't tell the audience the name of my effects because it simply isn't part of the patter. It will mean nothing to them for the most part (as far as my effects are concerned).

I only say it when the title is relevant. I say twisting the aces to change them into kings at the end.

I think telling the title of the trick before you start it is a good to frame the trick. The titles of music are always announced before played.
However, I normally don't use the original titles named by creators. I personally rename them to fit to my presentations. Hideo kato |

I mention the title of one effect: The Last Trick of Dr. Jacob Daley.
I do this only because of the patter that the history allows. Any other time I use a "title" it's tongue-in-cheek (e.g., I call my coins across using four half-dollars my "Two-Dollar Magic Trick"). |

I like to mention the name of the trick when I'm with a small group of people and that we have time to talk : I like to share my passion with them, so I will speak of the magician who created the trick (especially if it's a "big name" like Vernon, Marlo, Goshmann...).
For example, I like to perform "leipzig opener" (from Stars of Magic) and I usually say that this was the opening effect of a very famous magician bla bla bla... |

I never mention the names for laymen...i think it kind of lessons the magical effect if the spectator knows that you are just getting your tricks out of a book, and not that you knew them becasue you are a "magician"

I don't mention the names of tricks because it never fits into the patter for me. however, I do at times get a spectator who would ask me how I did a trick and won't let me blow him off...in those situations I would tell them "the name of the trick is ___ and you can get it at ___" that usually shuts them up and if they really want to know...they'll go out and look for it and that fine by me

If someone asks me the name of an effect, or where I learned it, I tell them. I want to bring as many new people to the 'community' as possible, because more brains equals better effects, methods, etc...

Hmm...I do think it frames a trick as said earlier. But it does this at a price. I don't name them for audiences but I do for friends. If people want to sit and talk magic with me then, I tell them who came up with it/who they did it for (this often comes up you know...churchill/ootw...malini/senator/chicken...lol).
So you often get celebfactor for free. Still not knowing how to look it up immediately (not knowing the name) when they get home is a protection. They might find it of course but it will take longer or they will have to ask a magic friend. M |

It depends on the effect. It seems to be best used to comic effect - for example, I remember seeing Guy Hollingworth performing for an american crowd, and his patter went something like this :
"I should very much like to show you a trick called 'Twisting The Aces'. And I have here, four kings - which just goes to show the kind of cutting edge magic we're doing over in Britain". It made me chuckle anyway :S Then at the end of the routine, he brings up the title again, when he changes the kings to aces, to 'fit with the name' or something. It worked well in the context - but as I say, it varies from effect to effect. I'd most likely not say "I shall now do the folding coin trick - please may I borrow your coin sir?" and proceed to do the 'biteout' effect. |

They have names? Do they come when you call them?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I make up my own name for the effect sometimes to throw off the spectator, or sometimes, because it makes sense with the new name. I call Hopping Halves the two coin trick because it only uses two coins and so on.

I don't tell them the name of it, but I always show them how it's done.

Oh! Showing them how I do that is my favorite part!
I only tell people who seem to be interested in learning magic, not just any spectators. And Magicians get the name, of course. |

I do not name the effects Unless it is an original name by me. For the same reasons all of you have stated. It usually doesn't fit into patter and they can research it on the web! Usually I think the specs don't care about the name anyway!

I agree with most of the people here. I do not give out the name of my effect. For example in 2 card monte I'll say here's a little game for you instead of here's 2 card monte.
P.S: WHY didn't I join these sooner! These forums look so awesome!
