IIRC it was Peter Kane.

The Wildcard that folks know is Frank Garcia's. You can find Peter Kane's original if you go looking. Wes James is a great source for this stuff, and also Jim Maloney.

But was Peter Kane the originator? Need to give credit for the Trick of the week. Next Friday starts Wildcards week. http://www.angelfire.com/magic2/tylermsmith

Yes, Peter Kane was the originator of the plot/use of the gimmick, but the today most known version is Frank Garcias, so he is tightly connected to the *Wild Card* .
(I did a research after I posted ) So JT is correct, but it still is Peter Kane who died not too long ago, whot 'invented' it.. If you want to know more, you can get more info by doing a Google search, typing f.ex. : peter kane magic wild card http://www.trickshop.com/wild_card.html shows even a demo! As others have pointed out, the original routine was by Peter Kane, and was entitled "Watch the Ace!" It appeared in Hugard's Magic Monthly (April 1962, Vol 19, No. 8, page 89). Frank Garcia took this effect, made some changes to it, and his handling was released by Lou Tannen as "Wild Card".
The history is detailed in Wesley James' book, "Enchantments", as an introduction to his effect "Watch the Wild Ace", which takes elements of both original effects and combines them into one fantastic routine. -Jim

If you check out Bro. Hamman's "Mystic Nine" you will find it is the same effect as Wild Card with normal cards. And was the inspriation for Kane's trick. Kane's creation was genius, Tannen decided to put it out (WITHOUT PERMISSION OR CREDIT) and had Garcia work up a handling, and they named it Wild Card.
My favorite version was Lee Noble's "Factory Rejects" where a half card, along with the full size cards changed... it was a nice presentation concept. However, Peter Kane's Gypsy Curse has emerged as the best for my way of thinking and Ron Bauer's handling is GENIUS... Dingle's comes close, but Bauer's is the smoothest and most logical.

Regarding Werners:
"Yes, Peter Kane was the originator of the plot/use of the gimmick, but the today most known version is Frank Garcias, so he is tightly connected to the *Wild Card* ." And Jonathan's: "The Wildcard that folks know is Frank Garcia's." I'm not sure this is the case. Many of the versions sold (and seen)use the "Glide" for the lay down. Garcia's early version did not (and neither did Kane's "Watch the Ace"). The common title is courtesy of Frank Garcia. His original handling is currently sold by Martini's Magic. Yes, Frank did collate some variants for a book later, as did Supreme Magic in the UK, saying they were the only people at the time authorised to sell Peter's effect. An early version with "the glide" appeared in Harry Baron's book "Card Tricks For Beginners". Al Smith drew my attention to the fact the book was first published in the late sixties (Martin Breese now owns the copyright)and therein the plot was probably miscredited, credit is given but neither to Peter Kane nor Frank Garcia. Peter's later handling and the climax display in "Gypsey Curse" is superb. Paul. |
