Sorry for the vague title.
DC does a beautiful story piece in his Grand Canyon Special about a girl and a famous magician. Theres a part where he sits on the park bench and picks up a magazine - he riffles thru the pages of it - then he riffles agains and the pages now have the girls photo printed on every one of them. I know this is based on the principle of the S------- Deck. But is this effect available for purchase? I would really like to make one of these up. Regards MAc |

I believe you are refering to his updated version of the magic coloring book. This is something quite easy to make. If you are not familiar with the coloring book, it uses the corners as opposed to the full length to create the gimmick. In fact the coloring book can have three completely different image sets.

Then again, DenDowhy, you ARE the master of taking a prop that can do three things and making it do more.

Notice how he doesn't reveal the cover of the magazine until the very end, at which point it seems to change along with the other pages.
My favorite moment from that sequence, though, is the vanish of the girl in the telephone booth. It happens in four stages: first her feet are gone, then the front door opens, then the back of the booth opens, then the side doors are pushed open, leaving an empty frame. She is so gone. The best part is the graceful way the sides slowly come down in the last stage of the vanish. The timing of that, combined with the effect of the girl's complete disappearance, combined with the music, creates one hell of a theatrical moment. (The prop is amazing to watch in and of itself: when the back door opens on its own, it swings around and consolidates with one of the side doors, which is then pushed down as one piece, as described. Either John Gaughn or David Mendoza gets credit for the design/construction.) I know this is a tangent, but I went back to watch the magazine trick after reading the original post and was inspired. My favorite moment in this video is when he sits next to the girl who's reading the news, she goes back to reading, he takes the news and now the girl has turned into an old lady beating him. So simple, but so clever. This is a good lesson how extremely simple things can bgecome so powerfull in a perfectly staged theatrical illusionary routine.
Another thing that imporessed me was one detail about the Stack of Boxes illusion he used to reproduce the girl. I mean, this illusion falls under the category of standard well known illusions. But what I really loved so much was the way his Stack of Boxes was designed and made. The thing that impressed me so much on this illusion was the way the interlinking connections between the boxes appeared. The boxes looked perfectly natural and then when he made a stack, you could see the connections between the boxes appear just like that! Yeah, the phone booth is a peace of art as well. This is one of my favorite illusion videos (and if you ask me this sequence is so much more impressive than flying above the Canyon itself). |

Talk with some Copperfield fans. Although there is no "legit" way to buy his past performances due to copyright laws, there are many Copperfield fans who will send you them for free (So long as you pay for the media they are recorded onto, as well as labor costs, and shipping). For all intents and purposes you are paying for the tap/dvd and its creation rather than the contents on it. This is what we like to call a "loophole."
