First of all.... I have been doing this routine for a while and am not sure whether what I am doing is actually the 'Sidewalk Shuffle' although the document that I have been working from refers to it as such. The version that I do does not use gaffed cards and uses the Elmsley count exclusively. I also only do this effect with poker cards. The question that I would like to ask is if anyone has an ending which allows me to be clean at the end so that the cards can be handed out as I get asked quite often to 'see' the cards at the end. Your help would be appreciated.
Thanks -Jim |

I believe the 'original' Sidewalk Shuffle was by Martin Lewis and can be found in Martin's Miracles. It does use gaffed jumbo cards.
I am not certain what sidewalk shuffle you are doing. Was it a commercial packet trick? Best Wishes Steve

Well, the effect I bought may have been a magic shop ripoff as what I got were 4 cards and a typewritten routine. The cards I received were two red queens and two black spot cards. In any event I eventually used blank face cards and black Ace of Spades. Maybe that will ring a bell..
Thanks for your response... -Jim |

This sounds like the original Joe Riding effect "Three Card Trick With Four Cards" marketed by Ken Brooke and Joe himself. This was a forerunner of the Martin Lewis effect which does use gaffed cards.
Normally used as a cabaret effect, where people rarely ask to examine the cards afterwards. A close up variant where cards can be handed out is "Virginia City Shuffle" which among other places is detailed on one of Mike Ammar's "Easy To Master Card Miracles" series of videotapes/DVD's. Paul |

I was about to say the same as paul: take a look at the "virginia city shuffle", it may fit your bill.

I remember seing Bob King do an ungimmicked version, years ago. It didn't use an Elmsley count, just a certain spread and a flushtration count variation.
I use the gimmicked version. If you use a simple handling, it will serve you well. Some handlings are just too complex and are too easy to mess up. |

The large Sidewalk Shuffle by Martin Lewis is four cards, gaffed, and a dynamite effect. I've used it for the past 20 years or so and it has wonderful routining and a great, powerful ending. Don't know about any other knock-offs, but this one is A-OK. Twenty years ago it cost ten bucks; now it's twenty. . . and worth every penny.

Teh best, by far, handling of the Sidewalk Shuffle is the Fred Kaps version, marketed by Ken Brooke. I would imagine http://www.stevensmagic.com the USA distributors of the trick, would still have it.
