Everyone knows logically 36 in and 3 ft are equal, but words have flavor and inflections that people subconciously associate with them. I think they would, in a perhaps subconcious way, perceive feet as being larger because usually things that are described in inches are small. Just my thought .

One thing I learned with teaching of thirteen year olds, is that they will tend to think that 36 inches is bigger. But then again, they don't always know how many inches are in a foot.

How about telling them your going to pull a 6" item out of your- Then they may not care so much about the length stated when the actual length would be greater. (see because 36" is longer than 6"..... get it?)
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

It also helps if you want to out and out lie. I've been rehearsing blockhead and I've discovered if I say 6 inch nail people take my word for it even though the nail is only 10cm or 3.9 inches but since they don't know how big six inches should be (being Aussies and lovers of metric) it not only sounds bigger but it IS bigger!
