If you have a car and some time and a good sense of direction, I suggest you check out Madge Elaine's World, 5121 East Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL 32803 (407) 281-9333. I've been there, and though most of the store is costumes (but I was there in mid October, when many costume-magic shops throughout the country switch over to mostly costumes), they had a pretty nice section in a smaller room in the back. It was standard stuff, but I thought very good selection. I was told that at times other than just before Halloween, there is a lot more magic merchandise. It's a funky store - I liked it. Call and get good directions - it's a 25 minute drive from the tourist area, in a strip mall, just behind, I recall, an auto parts store, in a separate house. I agree, that Magic Masters is kind of ridiculous - way overpriced, selection geared for tourists. Try Madge's - she's cool.

And he does a greta job! Michael, I absolutley loved the show. I wanted to see you after, but we had to go into the arena. But I will tell you, it was without a doubt, the best stage performance I have seen in my life. GREAT JOB!!!

When I was in Orlando, I saw the Outta Control show...very good
But I also saw some magic performed preshow at the Pirates dinner theatre (a great show too). Does anyone know who did the preshow there? It was short and sweet. I remember they used a tip-over trunk. |

Gotta love the Outta Control Magic Show! Sara and I go everytime we're in town! And Tony's always kind enough to chat with us a few minutes after the show.
Hey Erick - noticed you're there at Boardwalk a couple nights a week. How many nights a week do they typically have you there? (Ah Disney...my wife and I met working on the college program back in Y2K) Robert

On 2005-10-08 11:56, Tyler_Magician wrote: Magic Masters is a tourist-based, beginner-only shop. You can't buy new items on the market there, you can't buy supplies. For the most part, it's good-quality stuff...but it never changes and it's all over-priced. There's no reason for any true magician to go there; as there won't be anything there they don't already have and/or can't get somewhere else for a lot less money. Magic Max, unfortunately, sucks. They've had a few good employees over the years; but they've had a whoole lot more bad ones. Because of employees stealing from him and probably a little because he is in it for the money more than the love of magic, the owner of Magic Max has gone so far as to have cameras in his store to watch his employees. Not for security; but for micro-managing. They aren't interested in selling magic to magicians. They're interested in selling over-priced items to tourists at as fast a pace as possible. If the employees engage in conversation too long without a sale, the phone will ring. It's not a customer. It's the owner telling the employee to close a sale or get the customer out and hassle (hustle) someone else. I've had to go to them for supplies a few times because they were convenient; but ended up not buying anything anyway - regardless of my need. That's because, aside from the high prices, (and they are RIDICULOUSLY high), they aren't the least bit friendly or helpful. I make a point of telling them I'm a magician and that I'm local when I walk in there so I don't get the condescending treatment the tourists get and still they treat me like I'm a tourist and like I don't know that they're charging double and triple what anyone else is for the same products. The last time I was in there, I noticed that they had expanded their shop and the items available. However, their service is worse than ever, (the guy I talked to reeked of alcohol and was obviously not entirely sober), and their prices aren't remotely close to being competitive. You'd think that with all the "Disney Magic" going on and the tourist areas and attractions and with a NBA team named the "Magic," this town would have a number of "brick and mortar" magic shops. ...But it isn't. There used to be a pretty famous magic shop in the Magic Kingdom at Disney, but they did away with that more than 15 years ago. Florida, in general, is lacking in quality magic shops. As of the writing of this post, (Nov. 22, 2007), Orlando has one TRUE magic shop: Backstage Magic. They were located in a flea market on I-Drive, but have grown and expanded and are now sharing space in a "brick and mortar" building with a theatrical supply company, (Pizzazz Theatrical, I think it is). It's a good pairing and the magic shop is in a separate room that is conducive to good magic discussions and demonstrations. The owners, Tom & Donna, truly love the art of magic, support their local magicians, are members of the local IBM ring and have a good mix of classic illusions and new-to-the-market items. If they don't have something you want, they will get it for you quick. They know their regulars, too. Occasionally, I'll get a call when something hits the market they think I might like. I'm always calling them with my latest "must-have" item and they always seem to have it and are glad to hold it for me until I get a chance to get in to see them. Whenever I go there, they're always demonstrating tricks for new customers and introducing me to local people that are in there if I don't already know them. They always have a smile, a handshake and good news for me when I go in there. It's not full of touristy pretense and nonsense. It's just a small, local place for magicians that is better now than it was a year ago and will be even better a year from now. No matter what, it's always been better than the other options Orlando has for magicians. When you're in Orlando, go by, see Tom & Donna and buy lots of stuff from them so there will always be a place in Orlando for magicians. They're at, (and if I get it wrong, somebody - correct me): 928 Humphries Ave. Orlando, FL. Humphries is right off of Colonial/S.R. 50. If you're in the Downtown, Orlando area or near the Fashion Square Mall area, then you're close to Backstage Magic and have no excuse not to go! |
