I wanted to drop everyone a note about the “Harry Potter's Wand” currently being sold by Nobel Collection.
1) This is not a working wand. It isn't even a toy. It is an EXTREMELY fragile composite of wood and ceramic. The wooden piece (used as the tip of the wand) terminates within the ceramic about on inch above the handle (it does not continue through the handle). You could not have picked a weaker spot to stop the wood if you tried. Looks great but is an extremely poor design. The first day I dropped the wand onto the floor and it snapped in half. 2) I called the company and they said they sell 'collectables' and would not replace the item or refund the money. No place in the literature does it state that this is an extremely fragile wand, subject to breakage. It is presented as “An authentic recreation of the famous wizard's wand featured in the movie”. I seriously doubt that the wand in the movie broke every time it was dropped. I feel the company didn't provide sufficient information to make an informed decision. If I had known how fragile this item was I wouldn't have touched it with a 10' (appearing) pole. Guarantee & Returns Policy (COPIED FROM THEIR WEB SITE) If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you may return it within 30 days of receipt to receive a refund or exchange. Items must be sent back in original packaging. Please insure the merchandise for the full value of the item(s) for your protection since returned damaged merchandise will not be honored. Please note that shipping charges are not refundable. IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY GUESSED, I'M EXTREMLY DISSATISFIED WITH THIS PURCHASE! |

Just a question, and I'm not trying to be a smart a** here, but what made you think that The Noble Collection were magic manufacturers?
Collectables are meant to be collected and displayed, not used as working props in a magic show.

Yep this stuff is made strickly for setting on the book case and looking at. But even a collectable should be made to last. so if the quality is poor I would think a refund might be in order.

I suppose that's what you get for buying a wand from an "off-brand" maker.
I thought everyone knew that the best wands were obtained from Olivander's In the meantime have you thought of fixing your old wand? I hear Spell-o-Tape works well in a pinch.

There was no assumption that Nobel Collection was a magic manufacturer. I've got pleanty of wands for general use. This wasn't for wand spins and other show abuse. I was going for a specific look, for a Merlyn type character, and the look was exactly what I wanted. Collectable or not, there was nothing in the ad to lead me to believe this wand was going to fall apart the first time I touched it.
BTW, I found out about this wand from a posting on Magic Café. Oh well, live and learn. |

Though not an Olivander this gentleman looks to be a maker of very serviceable wands of the type you are looking for http://www.wizardskeep.net/moviewands.html

Hi Guys & Gals,
Losander has a limited edition dancing wizard want for $300 in the July issue of MAGIC magazine. It's a great looking prop. Some of my friends have purchased one. They say it looks good and works great! |

I've ordered two custom wands from Dragon Mother and am very pleased with both.
As of the date of this post, you will see a picture of my second one when you click on the link below. http://www.dragonmother.com DM has quite a selection and is more than willing to custom build them for you.

I think the key here is that you dropped the wand, it isn't defective and is sold as a collectible. If you drove your car into a brick wall would you think the car company will give you another?

Harry Potter stories ave gotten very dark since book two. There was a murder at a school competition and what looks like a civil war going on in the fifth and sixth books. Bridges are being destroyed and muggles in the wrong place are having their memories wiped just like Men in Black. Oh, and Harry's parents are still dead.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Scooby doo cartoons too had a dark theme to them...but I contend, happily, that such a story doesn't fit too well in the Bizarre..but let me shut up before I get beat upon...

I have two different wands from Noble and I think they're great. The fact that it can't survive unharmed a 4 foot drop onto a hard surface is irrelevant to me. Neither can my crystal ball, my iPod, my Palm Pilot or a myriad of other things I gladly own. A shame you broke yours but I would hardly call it "falling apart by just touching it". Just be thankful it was only a 50 buck wand, not a 400 buck iPod. And let's not besmirch a good company for not taking responsibility for your mistakes.

My vote is Harry Potter topics should be in the kiddie section. I like Harry Potter, just not here.

Harry Potter's initials are H.P.
Lovecraft's first two initals are H.P. Coincidence? Yes, probably. But I would say that, with subject matter gleaned from a vast storehouse of world mythology -- much of it quite frightening -- Ms. Rowling's series is an impressive source of bizarrist inspiration. No kid stuff here: the Harry Potter series is popular literature for a surprisingly wide-ranging audience, and in 100 years (or sooner) will likely be studied the way Dickens is today. At least, that's what my crystal tells me (and I always got "A"s in Divination). Best, Neil Back on topic: I agree that the wands at dragonmother.com are very nice. Alivans.com is also quite popular. But the artisan who crafted wands for the Chicago Close-Up Magic Competition is my favorite -- no website yet, but he tells me it will be up soon. Stay tuned. NT
