One of the really neat things about the copper set of shells I got from the school of scoundrels is that I can use the small by gosh sponge ball with this set. The shells are beautiful and because of the weight I can use the small sponge ball with this set.
The weight of the shells push the sponge ball down and the shell sits flat on the mat. If you want to use a small sponge ball as a large pea and play big tables and do formal shows in small rooms. This is a great feature of this set of shells. The copper set from the s4s is my favorite set in my collection. And the set I most often use when doing the shell game.

Whit's right! I meant you, Glenn Bishop, Bish the Magish, II! I assume you still sell it? (If so, that was a pretty good opening for you to give the particulars...)

I have owned the SFS street shells for over a year, and rarely leave home without them. With all the praise out there, I just bought a set of the LM shells. They are absolutely beautiful. I love them, but am glad I bought the SFS shells first. They do almost work themselves. It will shorten your leaning curve measurably. I 2nd the recomendation on the Kohler routine. I can't believe I wasted 30 years before learning the shells. I am also thankfull there are not as many great shells on the market as cups. I have too many obsessions already.

As long as all the other "usual suspects" have chimed in, I suppose I should put in my two cents worth just to further cloud ... er ...clarify the issue.
I don't know if I can really add anything except to say it is a matter of personal preference. I can no more tell you which shells are right for you than I could which car you should drive. And a set of shells is far more personal. As much as I hate to say it (because it doesn't answer your question) you should test drive as many different shells as you can. Go to a real brick and mortar magic shop. Get a set in your hands and try them for yourself. Find out for yourself which shells fit you. By the way, this kind of direct service is one of the reasons we ALL need to support our local magic shops and not buy magic from the lowest seller over the internet. If we lose our local shops, we all lose. As for which shells I use ... I own the SfS Golden Shells, the SfS Street Shells, and the LaMagiorre Shells. To be honest, over the years, I tend to rotate between them. They're all great products. But I will say this, I want a set of Colorado Silver Shells so bad I can taste it! But then I have a thing for crossing my palm with silver.

I use all the shells. The SFS for impromptu, bar, table hopping since they don't weigh much and fit comfortably in my pocket. You also don't need a pad since they work on any surface.
For the wider, larger and more formal close-up and street audiences I use the LM and Black Fox's excellent Scarabe shells. Black Fox also has an excellent large size walnut shell that is quite good. You can cut the Chanin Dip into the LM, not a chance I'm going to take with a 75. shell, but they are a larger lump in my pocket. I prefer to showcase them for the formal close-up show anyhow. I little note about the videos. I can't say enough about how good the Phil Cass video is. He sells and presents the shells for big audiences and the impact is tremendous. Bob Kohler is a master at the game and anything he puts those hands to will be worth your serious study. If you are a student of the 3-shell game you're going to study and use all of the stuff that's out there. No single video or pamhlet it going to answer all of your concerns or desires. "The Introduction To The Three Shell Game" was done with the begginer in mind since most of the available material is a little advanced and difficult for the young and unbalanced shell user. Adding Whit's manuevers with the begining routine gives you a lot of ways to go to jazz or expand your routines. I use the shells under a lot of differrent performance conditions and I need a lot of variety. The shells is very much like the piano. You learn the basic scales, add a touch here and there and you will eventually use everything you've learned. You other guys are already running to fast. To you the shells are very simple. I still remember the first time somebody picked the shell the pea was under. I know I tanked. I recently did a show where even after handing out the chips for betting and all the set ups 3 people at once, with different thoughts and objections, jumped on me. I was able, because of my practice and study, to one by one handle and elimante those issues. So for you officianodo's, don't worry, the new stuff will give you much to think about and put into your work. Whit and I will get together this fall and I know you're going to love it. I am very excited. By the way,if there is anything you would like to see us work on PM Whit or I and we'll see if we can throw it into the mix. It may be another forum topic. "What do the advanced workers want to see"? All the best. bob. |

About a year ago, I had never touched a shell. Saw the Kohler routine and became intrigued. I feel the strongest move is the one where the pea is flashed, and ends up aparently in the shell which has not been touched. In fact it's my closing sequence. I would love to see various pre arranged sequences of this type in future videos. Bob, thanks for the heads up on the Cass video. Great look at the psychology of the real work. Keep it coming, I need another fix.

I have a shell game set that I got from Bob Swadling. It doesn't use regular shells. Instead, it uses a metal "shell," similar to the Rink wooden shell. He furnishes it with a sponge pea. His routine calls for producing a large yellow sponge ball from underneath it at the end of the routine.

I perfer to use a set of micro cups that are sold as cups and balls. I purchased them at Magic Inc. in Chicago. I refer to them as a set of thimbles used in the early part of the last century for what was called thimble rigging (you get the idea).
They are a bit larger (and when I say a bit I mean a ton larger) than a thimble. It usually goes over without comment from the audience. You do have to adept to the float to make a perfect illusion. |

I have both SFS street shells and LM. Both are wonderful so I can only indicate a preference.
I use my street shells almost exclusively. I have just stopped using the LM shells. My street shells look completely real, the Chanin dip combined with the SFS perfect peas make it so I can do the shells anywhere. Just my experience... |

Don’t forget about the shells and peas I make. There is a new shell in town, or should I say an old one. Bill Palmer has them in his “Cups & Balls Museum” in his shell game section and Whit Haydn will be selling “The Deacon Dan Shells” and my soft peas after the first of the year.
I hand carve them from genuine American black walnuts, the way a con man taught me to make them when I was a kid. The black walnuts are smaller around than English ones, but stand almost as tall. They are very easy to grip and require much less movement to load or steal the pea. The pea also has a new twist, the working pea and the non-working pea are almost indistinguishable from one another and are both soft and spongy but the non-working pea stays under the shell so it can be handed out with the shells and the secret will not be discovered. I think these may be more like the shell used in the south around the Civil War period, English walnuts not being common in this part of the world at that time. So would be ideal for renactors of this time period and a great addition to any collection. Please make all inquires to Whit Haydn.

You can drive a nail with a rock, but I preferr to use a well balanced curved claw Bluegrass hammer. The rock is free but the Bluegrass hammer will cost you about thirty bucks.
