HA HA HA HA HA. Criss Angel, the best magician, wow what a joke. This man makes David Blaine look like Houdini. I didn't think it could get any worse than fixed camera tricks and audiences *Cough*(David Blaine), but I thought wrong. Criss Angel is quite possibly the worst magician there ever was.

I totally agree. I was expecting more from this MAGICIAN OF THE YEAR. Boy was I disappointed when I saw this TV Special. They must've searched for the dumbest people for his card forces to work. He would say point to a card and then would make them pick the one he wanted, what a horrible way of doing it, those people must've been clueless, or really drunk. Man that blindfolded climbing a ladder was really impressive, that's really hard to do. Sike, see ya 'round Criss Angel

Although I don't totally disagree with the both of you, I just have one question: How did your nationally televised TV special go? Oh, and how did your 2 day stunt on Good Morning America go over with the media? The special could've been way better, but you sure as heck weren't on TV. No matter what anyone thought of the special, he's getting the press and you aren't.

I believe any magic Televised is good magic. It just brings more awareness to our profession. But.... and a BIG BUT...
Angel's show was a little boring. "Sorry, dude." It was really nothing new. I did enjoy his levitation of the woman in front of his theater. Nice camera angles. His water stunt, well, if he didn't have the scuba regulator in his mouth the whole time & add some piranha, NOW that would be Cool !!! ( I did see him take it out at his escape).. On the Positive: I did like the Levitation of the girl, and the trash can. I usually don't enjoy stage illusion as well as close up/street, but I did like the Girl & chair. Now, I don't ever want to sound negative, but this show wasn't at the top of my list. I think I would watch Secrets Exposed before I watch Angel again. I saw the Angel show twice. That's enough for me. "Look I can blind-fold myself & stand on one leg" BB

Unfortunately, I do not have cable so I am not blessed to see the show that all of you are raving about.
However, I have seen his show in New York and I have to say that I was impressed more with the "atmosphere" than with the magic. Most of the tricks he performed onstage were the regular routines but with his "Gothic" flair. I agree that any magic on TV is good for the profession, but it is sad to see that Magic has become more about publicity than the skill itself. Granted, the magicians of yore were experts at publicity, but they still focused on the skill. |

Well, so is the Washington sniper but I don't think anybody here wants to be like him! |

Yeah, I'll say said comparison is over the top. I'd love to be like Criss Angel. I've always said that whatever I have to do to sell out and be famous, I'll make sure I'm first in line!
Please, everyone don't attack me at once. Also if it worked for Jeff McBride, it'll work for Criss Angel, or even me! The public is fickle and originality just doesn't cut it anymore. You must shock everyone!

The public is fickle and originality just doesn't cut it anymore...you must shock everyone! Please let me disagree! You don't have to shock your audience to entertain them!!! That's what "Ripley's Believe It or Not" is for. We as magicians shouldn't shock or scare our audiences, rather we should surprise and fool them. I went around taking a poll about Criss Angel (because you can't watch a baseball game without seeing his commercial) and a large majority said they would make an effort NOT to see the special. Most wanted to know why Copperfield and Blaine weren't doing the special instead of Criss. Mac King is one of the highest rated acts in Vegas (and my favorite) and he doesn't have to shock them. (unless you count the plaid suit as shocking ) He is just good clean entertainment. That's the bottom line!!! To entertain, not gross out by hanging on fish hooks for 24 hours. We don't need to change our style to be like the media now days, sexy perverted and scary. If you're original and entertaining, you may not get on TV right away, but your audiences will be much happier with your performance. Justin |

Good work on that poll. Apparently my gift of sarcasm doesn't come across so well in lowercase!
Obviously, the definition of "shock" escapes you. One of the many definitions is, "To cause surprise." As magicians, don't we shock people on a daily basis? "Is that your card in the orange?" "It is, well how SHOCKING!" There is a huge audience for what Criss does. It really uses a lot of Cirque De Soleil (hope I spelled that right ) type imagery! If we as magicians can't respect all other magicians and what they do when they turn their tricks , then we are in a lot of trouble!

This seems to me to be a narrow view...I believe Magicians (like any other artist) should not be confined to such a rule. I myself enjoy being shocked or scared from time to time, and appreciate a performer who can deliver. Unfortunatly, for me, Mr. Angel didn't accomplish that. I was sorta hoping he would -Billy-> |

Yes longbeach,
Criss Angel has something. Something that jealous people don't have, I'm not sure what it is, but it is something. You just can't pull a magic special from thin air. Networks need proof of profitability before ponying up the cash for a special. I'm sure people said similar things about Doug Henning & Copperfield when they started doing specials. "Look at that hippie Henning on TV. He should stick to being a lazy hippie and get off my TV!" or "Look at that Copperfield, man what a dork!" Back then people probably thought that if you were on TV doing magic, you aren't keeping it real. We should all stay in our little magic caves and do our little tricks to each other all day long, public be darned! Nathan Pain p.s. I love Copperfield & Henning, so please don't think I meant any disrespect. I'm just trying to show a parallel. Just like how your parents freaked out about Elvis and his hips, my parents freaked out about Twisted Sister and their lips!

You may have a point there.
IMHO... I was at a local IBM meeting last night and we talked about how we gripe and complain about Angel and Blaine using stooges and plants, and editing their specials. But we must remember that Copperfield, Henning, and even Blackstone used nothing but stooges for their specials. And I'm positive that Copperfield doesn't film his illusions in one take. He probably does it many times and chooses the ones he likes best. Isn't that exactly what Blaine and Angel do? Blaine chooses the best reactions from the best stooges and puts it on TV and looks like a god. Just remember that you would probably do the same in his position. It's just smart editing and filming. I enjoy watching as much magic as possible no matter what genre, whether that be shock magic, street magic, stage magic, etc. I believe that I can learn from all of it. Either good things that I need to do, or bad things that I need to make sure that I DON'T do! I have seen some bad magicians, and I just don't think that Criss was that horribly terrible. Just my thoughts.

I will say this: It was one of the few magic specials that wasn't a rerun this year.
If anyone sees my sanity, please return it to

There is television and there is taste: most of the time, they don't work together.
Anyway, there is an old saying: "The gustibus non disputandum" or something like that - Taste is not a subject of discussion. So, what am I doing? (Must shut up)

Just a point I would like to make here: I don't think that a critique of any given magician's work needs to be taken as a vicious attack. We obviously have varied tastes hereabouts, so how about hearing the criticism for what it is rather than a complete shellac of Mr. Angel? Hope there are no sore toes here, I am a born peacemaker

I praise Criss for raising awareness of Bizarrist magic. Quite frankly, I think a lot of magicians need to quit complaining about the act someone else is doing and go out there and perform their own magic. Negativity towards another magician can only tear down our art. It's almost more destructive than exposure of the mechanics of effects.
If anyone sees my sanity, please return it to
me. |
