Shortcuts to Success...
Experience is one of the best teachers. And each area one ventures there are a variety of different things one must learn. Doing children magic does not make you a stage entertainer or illusionist. Each require a "set of procedures" (well designed routines) to pull it off. What can cut the learning curve shorter are coaching mentors for each field, and subsets of coaching. For instance, the business end requires someone knowledgeable about marketing and advertising, pension plans, insurance, etc. For entertaining children it would require one skilled to children's magic which can pull the best of your personality and mix it with great children effects. If one wants to do maniplulation well, then one needs to seek a mentor in this area. Theater skills and stage movement pointer from people like Bob Finch, Joanie Spina, or Jeff McBride, can cut years off the self taught entertainer. (College helps) The KIDabra Conference helps with Marketing and Children entertaining because it is focused on many powerful effects and it is a mix of the best children entertainers in the world. There are the Marketing day prior to the conference that lecture on ways to sell yourself from those who used them. Jeff McBride holds his annual training classes and he does well with them. It's not cheap, but it can cut corners.

Nicholas,
Haven't seen the show but if you were coached exhustively by the best in the business you could do pretty well too I'd guess. But without further learning his "career" might be shortlived. Depends on the individuals business sense and inner passion for making a go of it. Also depends on the venue. Yes, Dean I will agree you CAN learn what not to do from buying poor materials. I've bought a few dogs myself. Returned them for their "!00% Money-Back Guarantee" 2 days later.... Bottom line though your success in business & life IS determined by YOU! How bad you want it and how willing you are to work for it will determine if you get it! Experience is also a great teacher. Strive to grow and evolve in life daily! John |

The NUMBER ONE KEY TO SUCCESS in any arena has always been a Deep and True Burning Desire! With-out it few will truly succeed for any great length of time. The rest is elementary.

John,
I understand and respect what you are saying, it is true. But for those of us who are beginners and intend working hard to make it and take performing up as a future, full-time career what you are saying it not very encouraging. I am studying tarbell course in magic at present and enjoy every bit of it, but you telling me: "A lot of people look at those of us who are successful and say "I can do that!" Simple fact is, YOU CAN'T!" is not one bit encouraging. I intend to go far in magic and I believe if I work hard and devote my time and energy I will, but I will also do better with encouragement not someone telling me "YOU CAN'T". Sorry if I come across as been cheeky, but I say what I feel! Mike |

Mike,
Let me rephrase that comment. "Without the work & knowledge that it takes and desire YOU CAN'T" There isn't any magic pill to success. There isn't a magic business in a box success. Success in this business is up to you and the TIME YOU put into growing your business. A lot of times people look at the fulltime performer lifestyle and thinks it can be attained overnight. They don't realize what it takes to make it and sustain it! I heard that someone asked the pup tent illusion maker after seeing Mac King use it, "Can I get Mac's routine with it?" Get real people and get original! Then no one is doing your act or presentation. John |

Mike, my brother,
YOU "CAN" Do it! and... You also can blow it! It's just the nature of the beast! - Nuthin’ personal! I know guys whom I refer who are relative newbies to the business but who have figured out (largely through working and learning SMART) how to be "great" in a relatively short amount of time! And, at the very same time I have seen folks who have been inside the industry for YEARS (like more that two full decades) who still DO NOT have a "clue" and are a true embarrassment to the arts and our market. In either case, each of us have to EARN our relative stripes by DELIVERING real, discernible RESULTS and worthwhile solutions for our buyers, the arts and our industry. This is rudimentary in nature I agree... the fact of the matter is we ALL have a 'tendency' to think we are better then we often are. The ONLY reason the full time pros are the full time pros is because OTHERES (The people who PAY us) say we are worth what we ask for and we diver what we promise and more. Just as it is TRUE for ANY professional field of endeavor, that YES there are good, bad and the ugly. The THING is, we have to learn to be honest with ourselves and realize (often with feedback) where we stand and be willing to constantly improve our standing accordingly. (and LKEEP growing even IF you're great!) THAT is the nature of success. If you are TRULY good, have a true burning desire, a well defined plan of action and system for the implementation of that plan, you are far and away further on down the trail than the average bear. Too, because we don’t just pop out of the womb as full time pros, we NEED a place and some time to be BAD. (Some are better at being BAD than others... hehehe!) so we can LEARN and EARN the right to be good, better, best. That is what we are getting at. No one here is 'intentionally' trying to steal your dream. NO WAY... if anything, we want you to GO FOR IT and make a real pro effort of it. All we are suggesting is that we need to be really, dead-on honest with ourselves and then RESPONCIBLE about what we discover in that process. Go for it... You CAN do it! How do we know... we've DONE it and we've helped other do it as well! So we KNOW, based on real proof and evidence that it is MORE than Possible! the honest to goodness FACT of the matter is, that IF YOU ARE WILLING TO "DO" WHAT IT TAKES AND BE OPEN AND TEACHABLE, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING! THAT is the message to take away for this discussion my friend. Knowing full-well that it is real WORK and there is no such thing as "Something for Nothing" in this arena... YOU (and only you, for you and your business) have to LEARN and EARN the right to play in the big leagues! Are there ways to leap-frog and amplify your results... yep! THAT is what this entire discussion is all about! PLEASE don't give-up or be put-off or put-down by any dream stealer if you are willing to "Pay the Price For Your Prize!" Hope that helps some buddy! I am at your service and In HIS Service, Deano <><

Wow long posts my head hurts....
Fact is Mike you can do it yes. But your not ENTITLED to it. Success meets nobody half way no matter what it looks like. Not the true lasting variety anyhow. People who drive me nuts are not those who want to be better and work. It's the ones who feel that after buing a thumb tip, an invisible deck, and a Fulves book that they are somehow my peer. So work hard, get out there and grab life by the lapels and shake it till it gives you what you want. Work hard, study hard, find the right teachers, and YOU can make it. It is a simple formula when you think of it. But climbing the Matterhorn is a simple thing too. Just go up. Going about it the way many do now it would be easier to climb the Matterhorn without any arms.

Mike, That is how I started out. I was reading Tarbell Vol 1 and I studies the coin moves then after I felt I got them down and had a little help from LuBrent, I combined them into a routine of about a minute and a half.
You are going in the right direction. Study the works of others. If necessary copy what they are doing only to learn from it. For instance, the standard dancing cane move is copied from others. It is a start. In learning web pages, I read and understood the code, then I could write my own. Copying a routine or purchasing a show in a box IS NOT WRONG. Most likely it will not be you performing but a copy of others. This is learning. It is a start. This in no way means the final product, service, routine, act or show will look like the original. One needs a starting point, go for it, learn from it, add to it your stuff, personality, character, and rewrite it so it becomes you. Sometimes after many years we forget how we started, sometimes the desire leaves, and the love for magic leaves, whatever... keep on moving forward, do what your heart believes, listen to only those who you know will be the best help to you. Join some clubs, read the books, play with it. Be happy at what your doing and it will all come together.
