A lot of what is old is new again when you go back into the books and research effects. Even stuff from the Tarbell Course can be stuff that has been forgotten and can become something new and exciting in the hands of the right performer.

Want to learn a "new" trick...read a very old book
Want to learn an "old" trick...read a new book
Might want to check out the wealth of archived material on "The Learned Pig Project" to see some plum examples.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Read my son read. Old magazines, old books, anything you can get your hands on. Read reviews of old shows to see what other did and come up with your own methods.

Many magazines are on CD Rom now or you can often pick up boxes of magazines at local auctions for a few bucks.

If you want specifics on different performers, (i.e.) Maskelyne or Devant, look at Mike Caveny's Magic Word books series. Jim Steinmeyer has two great books out in general circulation that will get you thinking.

DVD's are ok but they only give you on view on performaning and effect. When you read it can give you an entirely different idea.

Lucas, magicians never stopped performing those “old” tricks! Devant, Maskelyne, and Cooke’s creations are still being performed today. Levitations (the “goose-neck was first use by Maskelyne), transpositions, vanishes, and reappearances are still being done. The box that later became the “sub-trunk” was first performed by Myskelyne but not in a manner we are familiar with. Houdini took the prop and used if in the manner we are most familiar with today.

Buatier deKolta’s vanish of a lady was first performed on Mysclayne’s stage. The prop, the “deKolta chair”, is still being used today (check out Lance Burton’s show) even though no magician has ever performed the effect exactly as deKolta did (he vanished the drape as he vanished the lady!). Hey, deKolta even invented those little paper spring flowers that are still being made and sold today!

Go even further back and check out Robert-Houdin’s suspension and you will see that it is still being performed today as the old broom suspension.

And on and on and on…

Most of the card flourishes, coin flourishes, and ball flourishes being used today appeared on stage over 150 years ago! There isn’t a whole heck of a lot new in magic, there are cycles and old stuff gets rediscovered.

Find the old books and start finding the buried treasure!
