We all get them. You approach a group or you are in the middle of a miracle and someone blurts out a line you have heard soooooooo many times before. I'm making up a list of cliched lines that your audience will invariably say to you or their friends. I'm talking about things like:
Can you make my wife vanish? Where’s your rabbit? Do you have any doves up your sleeves? What do you do during the day? Keep hold of your wallet!!! Is this your full time job? Oh if only my kids were here… they love magic! Do you do Christmas parties? Did you go somewhere to learn to be a magician? My nephew does what you do. Do you have any secret pockets? Are those special cards? Are you going to tell us how it’s done? Can I hire you for the accounts department? Oh really, what instrument do you play? Can you levitate? I wouldn’t want to play cards with you. Which ones have I missed?
Creator of iconic magic that you will want to perform.

Here are some common retorts or answers:
Can you make my wife vanish? - No but I have a cousin Guito in New York who does that sort of thing! Where’s your rabbit? - Sorry, he's a HARE late! Do you have any doves up your sleeves? - Nothing between my sleeves, nothing between my hands, nothing between my ears! Keep hold of your wallet!!! = I would never do that - but would you like your watch back? Did you go somewhere to learn to be a magician? Absolutely, I learned everything at Magishigan State University Are those special cards? No! It's an ordinary, everyday trick deck. Are you going to tell us how it’s done? Yes, it was done very well, thank you. keep'em comin! |

Can you produce money so that you can give it to me? Or Can you change my dollar bill into a hundred dollar bill?

Can you teach me a trick?
Who is your favourite magician? What got you into magic? How long have you been into magic? Can you make a good living doing this? What do you think of that guy on TV who gives away all the tricks? Are you a member of the Magic Circle? Are you a member of the Magicians Circle? Are you a member of the Black Circle? Have you seen that guy on TV who makes the card go through the window? Are you related to Harry Potter? Are you related to Paul Daniels? Do you need a new assistant? Can I show you a trick? When you see other magicians do you know how the tricks are done? What's your best trick? You're not going to get my watch! I saw a magician a few years ago, it was a man dressed up as a woman Have you been on television? When will we see you on television? Do you hope to get on television? (pointing at glass) Can you fill this up? Do you do childrens parties? Do you go on the cruises? How much do you charge? How old are you? How many packs of cards do you go through? How many packs of cards do you have on you? Do you go round the pubs doing this? Do you saw people in half?

As I pull out the cards the smart ones warn me: "I know this trick!"

Ever seen Steve Spill's 1980's little booklet that lists many of these lines and has caracatures of famous magicians delivering responses? It's hilarious.

"Does you TT match your skin color because mine doesn't and I can't do this trick that I always wanted to do because I'm scared that people will figure it out because when it's on it's different and it looks like I have soemone else's finger on when I stick my hands out and wave them around really fast trying to distract them from looking there..."
Ok, so maybe it didn't go exactly like that... |

In reply to some of Aaron Lucas' faves -
Can you teach me a trick? A: Nope, sorry it's a union thing. Who is your favourite magician? A: (Hand goes up over head, points down at self) Three guesses! What got you into magic? A: My parole Officer? How long have you been into magic? A: About 3 minutes now... Can you make a good living doing this? A: Why? Is one missing? What do you think of that guy on TV who gives away all the tricks? A: I make a better living selling them! Are you a member of the Magic Circle? A: Nope, I'm too square. Are you a member of the Black Circle? A: Nope. I'm too Scottish Have you seen that guy on TV who makes the card go through the window? A: That must really make the window washer's day! Are you related to Harry Potter? A: Yep! I'm rapidly becoming Hairless Potter! Do you need a new assistant? A: Why? Is my old one missing? Can I show you a trick? A: No, sorry, it's a union thing. When you see other magicians do you know how the tricks are done? A: Sometimes, sometimes not, but we never tell each other. It's a union thing. (a running gag has now ben set up) What's your best trick? A: Cashing my paycheck! You're not going to get my watch! A: Too late! I saw a magician a few years ago, it was a man dressed up as a woman A: I see those down on Rush Street every Saturday night. And I don't want to, either! Have you been on television? A: Yes, and it broke from the strain! When will we see you on television? A: Cll ABC and let them know you want to see me on Oprah! Here's the number! (give them a card) (pointing at glass) Can you fill this up? A: I could, but it would be very unsanitary! Do you do childrens parties? A: No. I prefer corporate and collegiate events. Do you go on the cruises? A: That's the nicest invitation I've had all night! When do we leave? How much do you charge? A: What do you have in mind? How old are you? A: Old enough to know better than to answer that question! How many packs of cards do you go through? A: It depends on my forward velocity. How many packs of cards do you have on you? A: Frisk me and find out, dear lady! Do you go round the pubs doing this? A: No, mostly deserted, bombed out virus research facilities. (Here's your sign!) Do you saw people in half? A: Nope, I go for eighths because I give no quarter, either! Just a few wiseacre responses that I will never use, but enjoy thinking about using. Lee Darrow, C.H.

"How can someone so exceptionally handsome also be so incredibly talented?"
I get that one ALL the time, and I have come up with a response: "You know, I've thought about that a LOT, and the only thing I've come up with is that God just figured I could handle it!" ;)

"Isn't he ruining the art?" "Do you know who he is?" Hopefully people will forget about this guy soon. In about 20 years, I guess. And of course the obligate "Do it again!" In reply, I look distracted and say "I would if I could, but I just forgot what I did. In fact, where am I?!" |
