Stephen it was a little like pulling teeth wasn't it. I'll leave the explanation up to you, but for anyone who hasn't got it and is still trying to work it out, my previous wrong guess of subsequent or succeeding is a big clue. I think you might kick yourself Jonathan, I certainly did.

The people were all beheaded. As Stan suggested, it was an instruction rather than the answer. You need to remove the heads off the people on the list. For those who do cryptic crosswords, "head" is often an indicator of the first letter. So remove the first letter from the names on the list
