Sorry, Gecko, but my philosophy of magic is that I am an entertainer, that uses magic as my medium. We, as magicians entertain people, not cause them to wet their pants (or panties as the case may be.)
I always try to leave my audience mystified and wondering how that miracle happened, not scared. peter |

I agree with you Paddy, but you and I are of a different generation from him--well you and I are not of the same generation, but you follow my drift.
But I understand the visceral thrill of a screaming spec and why it appeals. But after twenty years of watching my students scream all day long, I became jaded. I want to see the strong reactions when I know I have done the best job possible. I want the reactions to be a shared experience because I connected with the spectators. A little scream now and then is nice, though.

Last month when I performed Pyro Perception, The FIRE Blister by Brent Walske, my spectators totally FREAK OUT when I stick my fingers into a flame and they come out with BLISTERS revealing their selected card! Of course, my intent was not to scare the spec. but it just happened. In restropect, I think they were younger group of folks...

Last week I used scotch and soda to melt a coin through the table. And she started crying and said I was a wizard. I don't know if she was faking it or not but she even freaked me out!

Well, someone who cries over scotch and soda is not the best type of spectator. That would be a little freaky.

I would cry less if there was less soda and more scotch.

I had this happen when I did a quick mental effect for a co-worker.
Had him just think of a card as he was visualizing a deck of cards in his mind. I took his deck, I explained that sometimes I can hit the card on the nose, but sometimes I miss. Well, I do some acting, concentrating, and finally pick a card out of the deck. Put the deck aside. Put the card on the table in front of him and said "I think I got it". I ask him what card he was picturing in his mind. He tells me, and then I had him turn the card over. BAM, it's his card. He drops the card, gets this astonished look an his face, then yells "What the @$%# !" Jumps backward about 3 feet, repeating over and over "NO WAY". I had to calm him down. Not my intent to freak him out, he showed me a self working card trick and then asked if I could do any tricks. Go figure.

I love a good spectator freak out. I'll even settle for their eyes getting huge as saucers. Recently I performed an effect where large black X marks vanish off a card and appear on my stomach....and the spectator's eyes got wide as saucers. I LOVED it. It was very satisfying.

I always like it when people freak out and then run away.

I have even got this reaction from the "voodoo ash" trick- it helps if you detach the method from the effect with as much time and mysticism as possible!
But, generally, the British audience are cynical so hard to get this reaction from (hence, David Blaine had a hard time in his glass tank!), but Derren Brown has done a good job by making people think he can control their mind using just psychology and underplaying the effect until the conclusion- masterful presentation! |

When you play it right, almost any effect can freak someone out. I've had some great responses from Pyro Perception and the invisible deck. Pyro is probably my favorite trick to perform.
"Is this your card?"
"No." *throws deck* |

I agree with most of the responses on here. I never purposely intend to scare anyone, but some people are just superstitious. You can show them just about anything and they will freak out.
I have had several people kind of flip out, but instead of reactions, they just sat there totally slack-jawed and silent because they didn't know how to react. I took it as high compliments, and of course later, they said how awesome it was. TomK |
