Yippee..I'm 60 today...and officially retired yesterday.

I'm having a couple of weeks off then going back on my terms on a yearly contract basis to help them out. Then I'll probably work on a part time basis til I'm ready to finally quit for good and "sit on the rocking chair on the front porch and watch the World go by".

Happy Birthday and Retirement Howard!!

Is the retirement age 60 in England or did you chose to take early retirement? Rocking chair?..naaah can't see that happening..you'll do it for a week and then become bored I'm thinking. Better yet, take the wife on a wonderful vacation, learn how to sky dive, take some University courses (dunno about your country but they are free here to people 65 and older), work on all those projects you've long put off, learn how to paint and sculpt, take weight lifting classes (studies have shown this is the most effective form of reversing ostioperosis) sp? , learn how to knit, basketweave, or finally work on crossword puzzles. Take a trip to Egypt to view the Pyramids, climb the Dunns River Falls in Jamaica, learn how to waterski, take a class on Chinese cooking, learn how to speak a foreign language..ect... So many things to do!! I'm envious! Oh wait..that's what I want to do when I retire. Nope can't see you in a rocking chair Howard - you finally have the time to now do the things you've always dreamt about and are still young enough to do them.

Have a wonderful birthday!

Vinny and Chrystal..my two good friends whom I met on the Café, thanks for the good wishes.
Chrystal..the usual retirement age in the UK ( when you can draw the State Pension) is 65 for men 60 for women. The reason I have to pack it in is I work for a US Company http://www.covance.com and their retirement age is 60.
Vinny..my private pensions are geared up to me finishing at 65 (final bonuses etc) altough I can pack it in at any time . I'll just wait and see.
Don't worry..I have plenty of "dormant" hobbies that I can get into and I'll get back to my running and cycling to keep fit. never cared much for the gym, indoors thing.
You never know Vinny ..I might get over to CA to see you..lock up your daughters!!

Best wishes, Howard. Hope you enjoy your gradual retirement. It's nice for anyone at that age to be able to think of a decent retirement. For so many the prospect of taking it easy isn't going to be an option. I originally was planning to give up at 55 ( three years time ) , but somewhere along the line that went badly awry. At least I enjoy my job, which is important if I'm carrying on into my sixties!

Dr chutney.

I know how you feel, things went a bit pear-shaped for me...

Usually you go in the tube at one end and emerge the other.....first 10 years have a few jobs, then for last 30 stay in a permanent one and drop out the end earning more than when you started.I went in one end stayed with one company 30 years , got made redundant and then had 5 jobs in 10 years and came out of the end earning less than when I started!.
There is a misconception that it is quite easy to retire at 50 or 55 years old.
unfortunately you would have to have built up a very large fund or be in a very good job to be able to afford that. In most Final salary schemes the penalty works
out at around 5% reducton for every year before the due date, so retiring at 55 when the nomal age is 65 would mean a reduction of 50% in the pension ( and that is already way below what you would be earning ).
My saving grace is that I always moved up a rung in the housing market whenever I had the opportunity so I'm sitting on my main asset that is worth "quite a Bob or two" so the plan is ..pack it in in the next year or so whatever happens ..sell the house and downsize..pocket a heap of cash and ..ENJOY.
Good luck to you I'm sure things will work out but I hope you don't get caught in the retirement age changes that are due to be thrust upon you. i.e have to work til you are 70.
cheers
Howard

FFS 60, Your avatar does you justice.

My age is under 40 by some degree. I don't need to work so could class myself as retired(ed) but the option is always open.
