Peter has his it right in the nail head!
You be in control and fix an adverse situation now! Routining can be a solution, but I personally think it's the chickens way out. I work with the personal space rule. It is a rule of respect, so if I have a disrespectfull patron, the show is cut short. As a whole I find that most people are respectfull of you, if you are respectfull of them, so the inside half of my table by nature becomes off limits, the out side half is fair game. Also anything placed in their hands or within their personal space is fair game as well. Use your gimmicks wisely and be prepared to end a show if needs be.

What I'd do in those instances is,
I finish the trick. Then slay him with a really good one. Like I bring out 2 long needles, then tell him to follow what I do, then I do Harry Anderson's Needle Thru Arm. That'll leave him breathless for a while. |

In my early days people used to grap stuff. But as time went by, they grabbed less and less. Eventually they stopped grabbing altogether. The reason for the changes were simple. I had several friends who I trusted watch and critique my performances. What they all seemed to notice was this... 1)my attitude... I was cocky, almost brash... I challenged my audiences, 2)I never gave them a chance to see if what I was using was real! How did I over come this? I no longer work for people. Now, I become part of the group. I make friends with them and have a good time with them! 2) the first few tricks I now do is in their hands. Once they hold the props and know they are the real deal, I can now ring in any gaff I desire (and trust me...I do) because I have earned their trust!

I've had people grab my stuff on about three occasions in around 20 years. I think a lot has to do with audience control and reading people and situations. I think a lot of instinct comes into play through experience.
My worst ever incedent happened recently and was discussed here. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=5 |

I have been doing magic for about 7 years and I have never had anyone grab my stuff! I wish I could say what the key is to this but I really don't know. I would probbaly have to agree with Mike Gallos post and that is to get their trust. Try to break down that wall before you lay any props down.

My worst experience was when I just turned a quarter to a jumbo quarter. Well the kid I did it to grabbed it and ran around the gym we were in. I didn't get it back for like ten min. argh

You could always follow it up with your next trick, "The Fist To Face Transformation". Although that effect has such a great "impact" that you might scare some people, and no I would never recommend such a thing. Haven't really ever run into that problem, but I'm sure it's bound to happen sooner or later.

I agree with the advice, always expect the unexpected. I"m very careful not to leave gimmicks exposed for grabbers. However, I think with the proper attitude and respect towards your audience, you won't have too many grabbers, like Mike Gallo says.
My favorite grab, and it happens once in a blue moon, is after doing a series of color changes, the spectator grabs my hand looking for a palmed card. Since I'm always one ahead, I never get caught. " a a ah, I don't touch your props, please don't touch mine". That's a line that I sometimes use. It gets the point across.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Frank, there is a simple solution to this. Make that guy part of your act and have him divine the thoughts of his lady friends card by giving him a flash of it. Then pump him with questions about the color, the suit, finally the value. He becomes really cool in her eyes and he SHUTS UP! Also, he may be the first to lay down the tip after that...LOL. Audience management is very crucial to being a successful performer! Mike |

This is good...but not quite what I was trying to put across...what you are saying...two people only think of the same card...what I stated above...one card is remembered by a person...her "soulmate" divines her thoughts proving they are compatible...and he does something amazing in her eyes making him her hero...and you...his ! When I first started performing magic I used to come off with a challenging approach and it always backfired. Now I find I'm much more comfortable and enjoy performing much more if I use a very friendly approach and I approach my magic with the thought I'm not trying to fool them I trying to share the magic with them, if that makes sense. If I do run into someone who's trying to challenge me I do exactly as you suggest I make them part of the magic and it's always worked out rather well for me. I also would to thank-you all for the excellent advice and insights. Joe |

I find it is very rare for someone to mess with my props and when they do alcohol is normally to blame.
It may be down to HOW you perform, if you are of the style -"look how good I am" then you will get people messing during your performance. The secret it to become one of them, but not quite. Make them laugh with you and at times at you whilst astounding them with good magic. If the are laughing and smiling then you could palm an elephant and they would not notice. The more relaxed you are (and this comes for knowing your props and material %100) then the more relaxed they become, which in turn makes it easier to do the magic. Paula

That's so very true. Since I spend 90% of my performance time in the bar, the alchol effect is a daily part of my life. I do a coffee shop as well, and let me tell you... caffeine has similar effect when consumed in quantanties. I'm also a big fan of the "joining the group" theory. Spectators are a lot less likely to mess with you if you're one of them, and not an outsider with a bright red target painted on your back. Best, Mike |
