On board the two unmanned spacecrafts Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 is a plaque with a pictorial message from mankind, showing the figures of a man and a woman along with several symbols that are designed to provide information about the origin of the spacecraft.

It serves as a kind of interstellar message to extraterrestrial intelligences.

NASA launched the two spacecrafts in 1972. Both left the solar system in the 1980s.

Edward R. Tufte, author, designer, Professor Emeritus at Yale University, and expert on information design, took the Pioneer Space Plaque and redesigned it. See the original and the new plaque plus the author’s comment here:

PS. Tufte’s book “Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative” (ISBN: 0961392126) contains a chapter called “Explaining Magic: Pictorial Instructions and Disinformation Design” that was co-authored by Jamy Ian Swiss.
