Stan,

I did a new code and ran it through Sharkys Vignere site to check it. I reduced the size of the message overall and the size of the key to about 15 letters to make it a bit more manageable. I've removed all spaces in the message to make it a bit tougher. Smile

Lets see if you can crack the code and tell me the message and the key that was used. Have fun!!

I may have some more codes in the future. I just picked up an Enigma machine off of E-bay. I'm also studying Navajo at the University extension.

I'll get you yet Stan Alger!!! (shaking my fist)

Hard to say. I did it at work, with constant interruptions.
Started about two hours before I PM'd you with the
solution.

Did it completely by hand. It would have been nice to have
software to at least do the tedious "busy work." (Such as
finding all the repeated 2-letter combinations and counting
the number of letters separating those repeats.)

If anyone is interested in learning the techniques I used,
consult Helen Fouche Gaines' _Cryptanalysis_, an
inexpensive Dover paperback.

It's very likely that your public library has a copy of
the Gaines book on its shelf, but it might be listed under
_Elementary Cryptanalysis_, the book's original title.

I could have used that earlier today!
My co-workers were giving me strange looks
as I kept reciting portions of the alphabet
while counting on my fingers.

I'm sure Vandy knows the answer to this one,
but for anyone else who decrypts the secret
message, I have a question:

Who is the author of the message?

I'll PM ya. I thought you'd know it. I was gonna offer that for extra credit.

If you wait for someone else to decrypt the message you might be waiting a long time.

Stan cracked this baby without the key phrase. That is some good work. If anyone would like to have some fun with this and try out the Vignere table, the key phrase was "Desolation Row"

Find one here;

Vandy,

I did know it. I was offering the extra question for extra credit.
But, heh...it's your puzzle. I should butt out.

Well there you go everyone. Decode the message and discover the source of the quote. Stan figured it out and recognized the source. Can you?
