Has anyone ever made some of the appearing Chinese Lanterns from the Tarbell Course (#5). I don't remember the exact name of the effect, but there is a square lantern/box that folds flat. From the inside 10-15 silks and 5-10 lanterns are produced.
If anyone has ever made these before let please let me know. I wanna know if you could recommend some particular materials for making them and stuff. Derek (other appearing lanterns are ok too please let me know if you have made anything that resembles an appearing lantern) |

There are some more ideas for this effect in the old Sphinx.
I would start with a real paper Chinese lantern and remake with a silk covering. There is a lot of absolutely gorgeous oriental looking fabric in the stores right now. Richard

Right now in the states you can find collapsible pumpkins with a wire form inside them. They could be recovered.

I was wondering if the appearing bird cages can be adapted into appearing chinese lanterns, and produced in the same fashion. With the proper misdirection and/or an assistant, or perhaps under the cover of a silk production, a lantern can be produced.

We've used Chinese lanterns to light film sets, believe me, you can pop them open quickly. If you added some weight to the bottom it's possible to open them using one hand by simply lifting them (they can be a bit stiff when new). As far as covering them, they are available in various colors and sizes.

To anwer Natualturns question...YES, It can totally be done as you say, a friend of mine made up two of them and they worked wonderful. He did use an 18 inch silk for cover.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to take another stroll through Chinatown and do some lantern-hunting. Perhaps it can be manipulated and produced like bells. Any resources available for lantern magic/manipulations?
