I remember Al Goshman.I saw him perform many times in Europe years ago.
He was a wonderful entertainer, very funny and a master of misdirection.
I wonder if books or videos of his magic are available today.
Does anyone know?
Thanks
Marc

There's a book (and I believe a video companion) called "Magic by Gosh." You may want to seek that out.

As I understand it, both the book and the video were produced by Mr. Goshman himself, so there's no major publisher to contact. However, most well-stocked suppliers still carry one, the other, or both.

Goshman also sold a separate manuscript describing his "Cards through the Newspaper" handling, and he may have done this for some of his other effects.

Try H&R Books, they are very good at this sort of thing.

I share your admiration of Mr. Goshman, and I can name two professional close up workers who describe seeing Goshman's act as a "religous experience" and the moment that determined their choice of careers.

I saw Mr. Goshman, in 1976 before I knew much about close up magic. (I still have lots to learn about the performance and connection aspect of magic.

This man opened my eyes to a world of possibility, and was a major contributor to my interest in coin magic and the importance of connecting with my audience. The introduction to Magic by Gosh has as much magic, perhaps more than the rest of the book.

There was only one Goshman(his son continues his product line) and there is only one of you.(and thank goodness only one nearly normal magician.

If you see his video, bear in mind his age. His chops had slipped a little, but the psychology, timing and exquisite routining were still extremely strong.

And one more thing, during the explanation phase of the video, Goshman explains how he developed his legendary retention toss vanish. He demonstrates the movements with just his empty hands, but the illusion is so good, you'll swear that you saw something go from hand to hand.

If you think about it, that simple gesture was an extremely elegant demonstration of the distance between what we do and what the spectators see. A retention-of-vision vanish with no object. Clearly the "retention" occurs in the mind, not the eye.

Agreed. Albert will go down as one of the all-time greats in close up magic. It has been siad many times that magicians went to the castle to see Dai Vernon, but laymen went to see Al Goshman!

Having seen Goshman as a teen, I have to say that he really blew me away! To this day, my father always mentions "That guy with the coins under the saltshakers"

And this was over 20 years ago!
