Would any one would like to share the titles of their favorite short stories about Magic or Magicians? Also would anyone remember the title and author of a classic fantasy short short in which a magician at a carnival sideshow has a heart attack while levitating a member of the audience? The image of the hapless volunteer floating higher and higher into an air until he vanishes from sight has haunted me for years.

I don't know if it is proper form to answer my own question, but I finally tracked down the title and author of the short story I mentioned in my previous post.
It turns out to be "Levitation" by Joseph Payne Brennan. Two other short stories that deal with Magic and Magicians that I recall enjoying were "The Magic Shop" by H.G. Wells (already mentioned on a previous thread "Novels About Magic") and "The Kugelmass Episode" by Woody Allen. Strangely, both "Levitation" and "The Kugelmass Episode" feature climaxes in which a magician suffers a fatal heart attack, leading to a terrible predictament for his volunteer. Does anyone have another story they would like to add? |
