I can do Hot Shot Cut with a fair degree of proficiency. However, I can't control where the card GOES. Can anyone help with some tips?
Thanks, DW |

Its very important that you keep the card at 90 degrees to be able to shoot the card out, which gives it the spin and from there you have to practice catching it, Daryl mentions this on his dvd on vol 8 of his Encyclopedia of Card Sleights dvd if you don't have it.

It's a knacky move but three things you should think about and experiment with are how far you rotate out the card to be 'shot', the amount of power you use in the middle to finger to flick the card out and the overall position and orientation of the hand holding the deck.
Also I found this much easier to learn with a new(er) deck - old ones lack the stiffness and rigidity needed to flick the card out. However once you've got it down with a newer deck you'll find you can do it with old ones too! Oh yeah and practice! |

I think everyone said enough about how to control the shot. All I can say is you should experiment with different positions of the middle finger in order to get a certain distance and speed. It is also on Extreme Beginners taught by Daryl himself, which I am waiting to get tonight!

Thanks for the tips guys. I've done a lot of experimentation but had never found a sure fire way of getting it accurate. I've even tried flicking my wrist to make it go further - sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
Any more suggestions are equally welcome! DW |

Not 90 degrees, MORE than 90 degrees. Or less or whatever, more towards your fingers than 90 degrees anyways, that's what Daryl's says.

Can you post a webcam so we can see what you're doing? That way we can give you specific advice.

Any suggestions on keeping the two stacks neatly together? I tend to get to the flick and both stacks are rather sloppy, which makes a good shot more difficult.

Winstonwolf, thanks for the offer. It will mean getting the web camera to work, something I have not tried until now. I'll give it a go over the weekend!

Well have you got the right technique?
Are you using the right finger? Don't hold the deck too tight or the card won't be able to get free. It really is knack though, if you have the right technique then just keep at it. |

Practice is the key.
I can't do it 100% of the time but I'm sticking with it I also like the Brian tudor cut. |

With knacky moves, like this one, I recommend you find somebody who can do it well and get them to look at what your doing. More than likely they'll be able to correct any problems in about 5 minutes - saving you potentially hours of practice to get to the same point.
Or as I said earlier post a vid and we can all help you. Shoot one angle from underneath the deck so we can see the flick out. Keep practicing as well - this is a top move! |

Oh and once you have practiced it a lot you get a feel for how far the card goes with the amount of pressure you personally use, it becomes a constant thing -- you'll know it always goes -this- far in this direction. I often fire it off and close my eyes just as I do (as it releases from the deck) and catch it perfectly with the other hand (rather, shoot it to the other hand which hardly moves at all).
And with some more practice you can shoot it and catch it back on top of the deck. =)

Underground, above ground, whatever. I don't need a label, thanks. |
