Ok guys, here's a question for the seasoned pros...
How on earth do you keep track of regulars and know what you performed for who and when... What I mean is, do you have a way of keeping track of your table-to-table shows? How do you know when to do you 'other' routine...

If you recognize the repeat customers, it sometimes never hurts to just ask them.
"What did I show you guys before?" (as if you have tons of stuff...) This also lets you know what things the laymen find memorable. ~michael

Usually I will recognize the people I've performed for. If not I might ask if they have seen my magic yet.

Unless I recognize the audience, I always ask if they have been to the restaurant before on a Tuesday night. If they have, I ask if they have seen me perform. (A friend of mine also works that restaurant the same night).
I also try to continue to add new effects, as we get a lot of repeat business. Hey, repeat customers are something restaurants strive for!

I try to remember people as much as possible BUT with 5 different gigs each week it's hard. So I always bring on top of my "regular" stuff...
1 NEW item & 1 REWORKED item and try to routine them together into a 4-7 minute piece for my repeat customers. Now I know it seems hard to have 52 new items a year but...NEW just means I haven't done them for YOU before, if your a magician you easily have 52 effects on the shelves. Inside books, dvd's and from the shops! One new item x 52 weeks a year, then start all over again! REWORKED items just means, I've used something once, now I'll use it again but in a different way, like: a few weeks ago I used loops to make their fork "move" with my mind, so tonight I'll re-work loops to make their napkin float between my hands. They see 2 totally different effects, you used the same method twice. Next week I might use loops for the Haunted Deck illusion, etc, etc. You gotta get creative to #1 Not burn out yourself out #2 Not burn out your repeat customers! Fun but hard! |

How about asking them!!! "Hey, I'm glad to see you back. What did I show you last time? I like to show you something new everytime you come back." It starts a conversation. I use this a lot and it works.
On the extreme end, not something I would do, but Ive heard that Johnny Ace Palmer logs this info in a book. He writes down the name, date, and tricks performed. He never lets the audience know he does this but if he recognizes them on a return visit, he looks the info up and amazes them with his extrodinary "memory". Miguel Rangel

You seen it above but yes, Just ask them. Here is a good way. "So, what's your favorite trick that I've shown you so far." This does lead in to the chance they will want to see that one again but you can follow it up with "That one is fun but let me show you this one."
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

Read Harry Lorayne's book on remembering people. It will help you a ton. First of all when they come in you can greet them and use their name. If they are with friends or better yet clients, this really makes them feel important. Oh and by the way people who feel this way tip better. If you don't know the name ask the server, bartender, host, hostess. They may very well know. They also have a vested interest in the theory.
I would say to avoid asking them to tell the truth. Use other channels. The key is to treat new people like regulars too. It really helps believe me. Don't worry too much about altering your routine for them. Chances are pretty good they will not remember everything you have done and if they brought friends with them it was BECAUSE they LIKED what they saw. Too much new stuff means not enough rehersal time. Don't fall into the trap. Better to do really solid great magic than mediocre magic not ready yet. Glad regulars are such a problem. Nice one to have. Danny

I have been working in the same restaraunt know for 3 years! I know practically everybody customer that eats their! I basically mingle as if I am with friends, I always manage to come up with something new, even if it's completely impromptu. I find it good to get the staff involved, e.g, you have a card picked, then you fail to find it, as if screwing up the trick wasn't bad enough, the waiter interupts to clear the empty drinks, but wait! Whats that stuck to his forehead? No it can't be! Its the choosen card!
I guess what I am trying to say is, if you can force a card then you can always show them something different! Check this one out, I got fed up with people asking me if I could throw the choosen card through the window like David Blaine. Then one day I had the perfect idea! Now when you press a button on my car key ring, the car lights flash and the boot flys open. So I stuck the 2 of hearts to the boot of my car and attached by string 2 heart shape balloons in to the boot of my car. So when I have forced the two and made it dissapear, the spectator presses the keyring, the boot flys open revealing the two of hearts and then two heart shape balloons fly out of the boot. I do loads of this type of magic and it always seems to be thought of about half an hour before I am meant to be at a gig!
