OK here is the difinitive answer.
Charlie Miller used to say. "Go downtown to the public library, and as people come out the door, do a survey and as them 'Do yo know how the linking ring trick is done?'"

It's better to ask Google: "How many searches for linking rings?" The kids of today, who is most likely to hunt for the secret, probably don't even know where the library is located...

Ever ask a tight wire walker the "secret"? (He can walk it on the ground too! But I guess that is dangerous. There are things to run into.)

I believe that two of the reasons the rings are so perpetually fooling is not about the all-important method we're all going on about here at all, but a) the inability of the audience to tell the difference between a linked and an unlinked ring, and b) the perceptual inability of the human mind to conceive of a 'ring' as anything other than two-dimensional ... the moment a ring starts entering into three dimensions (as it must do to link to another), something magical happens in the mind of the spectator and they stop being able to cope.
Don't forget to breathe.

If the rings have been exposed, why are we saying "k** ring" and the like.. I am looking forward to getting my first set in the mail this week. I have long resisted the rings, but now embrace them with open arms! Everyone is right, you can create magic with them. People know that magic isn't real, but if you can take them somewhere, they will go with you. It really has nothing to do with methodology. In the theatre, the audience knows that they are watching actors, yet, real tears are cried for imaginary happenings. Kosmoshiva brings up good points about the actual point of linking and unliking. Also, like most good effects, the rings rely on handling and gimmicks working together to create magic. How many laymen remember what the "standard 8-ring set" consists of? I didn't even see the exposure show, and it was on 10 years ago. The "public" has a much shorter memory.

Your presentation will have to buy the spectator. If it can be performed right, then many people will be amazed.

Thinking you know how and doing it are entirely different things. Watch bull riders at a rodeo. Ready to try it?

I also disagree. Most people do not know how the rings are done.
A good presentation with proper performance skills can receive a standing ovation. Excellent performances of the rings will leave an impression in the audience's mind long after the show has ended. |

I too have a friend who thinks the rings are hacknyed, old and cheesy, I tend to think however that it's not the rings fault, but the magician who weilds them.
Also Robert Harbin had a crazy way of handing out all the rings at the same time using a standard 8 or 6 ring set, it may even work with a 3. Check it out, I think it's in Harbincadabra. Swapping from hand to hand is important to keep the key from being so trackable, but the way it has to be done is through using links and unlinks that do this, as passing awkwardly from hand to hand is a tell. Also something I feel is important, and probably controversially so as it goes against what Harbin stated in his analysis of the perfect linking ring routine, is to never create the bunch of keys form, or all rings linked onto one. If there is a gaffed ring guess which one it is? Ok Dai Vernon had a nice way out of this, but that presentation has limited conditions. Interesting fact, Troublewit (the art of making shapes from a peice of accordian pleated paper with a couple of extra folds) was created in China, sometime after Paper was invented in 105AD. Linking rings were also in existance at this time. Both have presentations that involve forming shapes of everyday items, often to witty patter. Coincidence? And if troublewit can be a valid form of entertainment then why can't shapes from rings? However it will take a funnier man than me. Perhaps when the magicians were writting the books telling us not to form many patterns, there were too many magicians doing it badly, perhaps to show off how many they knew and how clever they were... PErformed WHit Haydn's comedy routine last week at a cubscout leaders roundable. It rocked, the audience laughed and several people came up to me and said that they had no idea how I did it.

I play around with the rings from time to time. For family and friends I've done Whit's routine. My newphews nearly peed themselves the first time. I really prefer simple smooth routines done to music. No more than 3 rings. Marc Desouza's is very nice and has a great thing called "The Soupbowl Move" that I really love. That said, the rings are not a part of my working repertoire.
There was a story told by Mike Skinner or Roger Klause about working at a magic shop and someone came in the day after a Henning special. He wanted to buy the "Myster of the silver rings." Yes sir, would you like the 9 inch mystery, or the 12 inch mystery was the response. The next day, the guy returned them because the was a slit in one of the rings and some were welded together. "These aren't like the ones Doug Henning uses!" His money was returned and he left in a huff. I'm sure I'm getting details or names mixed up. Do you know this story Pete? |
